  • This position is responsible for performing all phases of building construction, renovation, and maintenance.
  • Work is performed inside county buildings and outdoors where employee is may be exposed to hot, cold or inclement weather. Employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Employee must wear personal protective equipment such as glasses, masks or gloves.
  • Work is performed with employee intermittently sittings, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. Employee must lift both light and heavy objects frequently, climb ladders, possess a high degree of manual dexterity, and ability to distinguish between shades of color.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid drivers license issued by the State of Georgia for the class of vehicle or equipment operated.
NATURE AND SCOPE
  • The purpose of this position is to assist in maintaining county buildings at an acceptable standard of safety, attractiveness, and utility. Errors may result in unsafe and/or unsightly work which could create legal liability, an unpleasant environment for employees, and a poor image for the county.
  • Guidelines included County Building Codes, work orders, construction specifications as shown on blue prints or designs, and instructions from the supervisor. Guidelines are usually clear and specific, but employee may be required to use independent judgment and choose guidelines which apply to a given situation.
  • The work of this position is to perform maintenance tasks in county buildings. The variety of tasks to be performed and the occasional lack of specialized tools add to complexity of the work.
  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of other county departments and vendors.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Performs building maintenance tasks including structural repair, electrical work, heating and air conditioning servicing and plumbing work.
  • Performs general carpentry work on new construction or renovation projects such as building concrete forms, hanging doors, windows, and sheetrock and electrical work.
  • Inspects facilities and contacts representatives of county departments to receive information regarding type and location of problems.
  • Performs emergency maintenance and/or repair tasks as needed.
  • Operates county vehicles, bucket truck, lift, ditcher, bobcat, or tractor as necessary for the purpose of performing maintenance or construction activities.
  • Purchases job materials when necessary.
  • Responds promptly to facility emergencies when on-call.
  • Completes work order information to document labor hours and materials.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Indirectly supervises the activities of a trades worker or helper on an assigned work order.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and standards used in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning work.
  • Skill in operating bucket truck, various other gas-powered equipment, saws, plumbing equipment, and hand tools used in carpentry.
  • Skill in oral communication.
  • Skill in understanding and following oral and written instructions.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the class of vehicle or equipment operated.

A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
