Job summary

Innovative Livestock Services, Inc. in Great Bend, KS is seeking qualified Pen Riders for our feed yards. This full-time role focuses on the health, welfare and movement of cattle, reporting to the Cattle Manager.

Duties include reviewing daily cattle movements, performing head counts, moving cattle to scales and shipping pens, riding on horseback to inspect and decide on pulls, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring safe handling in all yard areas.

Responsibilities

  • Review daily agenda for cattle movements.
  • Perform head counts and move cattle between pens and scales.
  • Move cattle using low-stress handling techniques on horseback.
  • Inspect cattle from horseback and decide on pulls to home pens.
  • Maintain accurate data entry and records.
  • Gather stray cattle and rehome to appropriate lots.
  • Operate safely in yard environments.

Job Details: Job Location: Innovative Livestock Services Inc - GREAT BEND, KS 67530, Position Type: Full Time, Education Level: None, Travel Percentage: None, Job Category: Other, Innovative Livestock Services, Inc. is seeking qualified Pen Riders for our feed yards located in Kansas.

This position is responsible for the health, welfare, and movement of livestock in the feedlot. Reports to Cattle Manager.

Specific duties include, but not limited to:
  • Review daily agenda for cattle movements.
  • Perform head counts, retrieve cattle from all applicable pens and move to scales and shipping pens.
  • Drives cattle from one area of the yard to another humanely by practicing low stress techniques including the slow movement of cattle.
  • On horseback, ride through pens and/or pastures, inspect cattle and make decisions about pulling animals to be evaluated.
  • Evaluate respiratory observe and recovery pens for re-treatment or movement to home pens.
  • Maintains accurate computer data entry and thorough record keeping.
  • Gather and move strays back to appropriate lots and pens.
  • Rides horse safely through acute awareness of surroundings and exercises caution in dangerous environments.

Education/Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three month’s related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability: Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

Math Ability: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
