Job summary

The Hanover County Sheriff's Office is seeking candidates for current and future Court Bailiff positions. This sworn role provides security in the courtrooms and supports the judiciary. Starting annual salary is $61,983 plus excellent benefits.

Incumbents perform protective service and human support work in court security, reporting to Court Services leadership and potentially supervising no staff during shifts. Twelve‑month probation and weekend work are required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of court procedures and of police methods and procedures.
• Ability to exercise tact and judgment when handling visitors and prisoners.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to develop skill in the use of firearms.

Responsibilities

• Ensures the security and order of courtrooms before and during court sessions.
• Transports and supervises the movement of prisoners to and from court and holds cells.
• Transports prisoners to other jails and institutions.
• Removes unruly individuals from the courtroom.
• Searches courtroom for contraband and inmates for unauthorized possession.
• Responds to and carries out orders of the Judge.
• Serves summons, notices, warrants and capias.
