Job summary

County of Sandoval's Sheriff’s Office is seeking a Court Security Officer to maintain order, escort and supervise defendants, and protect visitors and staff across court facilities. The role requires vigilance, physical fitness, and the ability to operate screening and safety equipment. Background checks and drug screenings are required, with occasional overtime.

Work is based in the Sandoval County complex, with shift work and occasional long days to support District Court and County meetings.

Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, the Court Security Officer maintains order in assigned areas as directed by the courts, takes persons into custody and provides assistance to the public, court, and other County employees as needed to ensure a safe and orderly environment for the District Court, Administration Building, Grand Jury sessions, Probate Court proceedings, and County Commission meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited institution and two (2) years of security guard, court security, or loss prevention experience or work as a law enforcement, detention officer, or correctional officer with a state, local, or Federal entity; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS

• New Mexico driver’s license may be required.
• Must meet New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent correctional/security/armed forces firearms training standards within 30 days of employment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must pass a background check applicable to position
• Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
• Must pass a pre-employment psychological evaluation
• Previous experience in Military, Armed Security or Law Enforcement experience is highly desirable.
• This position is subject to random alcohol and drug testing in accordance with Sandoval County Personnel Rules and Regulations Article XIII Drug and Alcohol Policy and Testing- Drug Free Workplace.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

This position reports to Sergeant and exercises no supervision over other staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

• Patrols the Sandoval County Judicial Complex, Sandoval County Administrative building, and other areas of the main campus on foot to provide a visual deterrent against disorder and provider sense of security to employees and patrons of County facilities.
• Provides assistance at the lobby information station.
• Attends District Court proceedings and Domestic Relations hearings to provide courtroom security to the judges, staff, and visitors.
• Screens visitors visually and with the use of a hand wand magnetometer and walk-through magnetometer to ensure compliance with court ordered restrictions of items such as weapons, electronic devices, and food or beverages from entering the facility; operates the X-ray machine to scan packages for restricted items; monitors the facility’s security video system.
• Takes person(s) into court ordered custody; monitors prisoners in holding cells; physically removes disorderly patrons from court proceedings; detains persons for Deputies, as needed.
• Completes incident reports and associated documents as required with the use of department computers, equipment, and various software programs.
• Attends Grand Jury sessions, Probate Court, and County Commissions meetings to provide security to court staff and County Commissioners and visitors to ensure an orderly and safe environment.
• Operates County owned passenger vehicles as directed.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE OF

• Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
• Proper use and application of restraining devices.
• Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical databases.
• English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

REQUIRED SKILL IN

• Resolving problems and making decisions in agreement with State statutes.
• Applying techniques and tactics up to and including deadly force.
• Demonstrating firearms proficiency in accordance with the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent correctional/security/armed forces firearms training standards.
• Interacting tactfully and professionally with disorderly persons.
• Communicating professionally and effectively with the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed throughout County court facilities and occasionally requires moderate to high levels of physical exertion. Must maintain a level of physical fitness to apply physical restraining devices and to physically restrain disorderly persons. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, communicable diseases, and potential physical harm when confronting disorderly persons. Must maintain weapons proficiency; must participate and qualify once a year on the day and night course of fire. Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time. Work requires visual and hearing acuity sufficient to perform essential and supplemental duties and to safely interact with inmates. Work frequently involves periods of time viewing a computer monitor and operating a keyboard or control panel. Work regularly requires speaking, hearing and utilizing a phone, cell phone, radio, copier or fax machine. Operates a County vehicle as necessary to attend meetings, training and perform related job duties. Shift work. Work is performed on any assigned shift during weekdays, evenings and holidays. Mandatory Overtime work may be required on an occasional basis.
