Job summary

Tulare County Superior Court is seeking an in-person Court Reporter to report verbatim court proceedings using stenography or voice writing equipment. The role requires CSR licensure and the ability to read back testimony and manage transcripts with confidentiality and professionalism.

Under supervision, you will set up equipment, identify speakers, and handle transcript requests while meeting deadlines and standards set by statutes and court rules.

Qualifications

  • Possession of Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license issued by the Court Reporters Board of California, in accordance with Government Code Section 69942.
  • Ability to read and transcribe verbatim from court notes and audio or stenographic streams.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information and comply with court procedures and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Report and transcribe verbatim minutes of court proceedings using stenography or voice writing equipment.
  • Read back all or portions of the proceedings upon instruction from the judge.
  • Setup and maintain reporting equipment at the work location and transport it as needed.
  • Identify speakers and note exhibits or evidence introduced.
  • Process transcript requests and produce transcripts in a timely manner as required by code and statutes.

Job description

Under general supervision, Court reporters report and transcribe verbatim accounts of official Court proceedings pursuant to standards promulgated by statutes, rules, regulations, and policies.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Court Reporters are responsible for providing accurate verbatim reporting of proceedings in all required or requested Court hearings. This classification is distinguished from the Court Reporter Realtime in that incumbents of the latter perform Court reporting and transcription duties utilizing realtime software.

This classification is further distinguished from the Court Reporter Realtime Certified in that incumbents of the latter perform Court reporting and transcription duties utilizing realtime software and are required to be certified by the National Court Reporter Association.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
  • Supervision provided by the Courtroom Services Manager, or designee, and schedule coordination is provided by the Court Reporter Coordinator.

  1. Reports and transcribes verbatim minutes of all Court proceedings as required utilizing stenographic or voice writing equipment.
  2. Reads back all or portions of the official Court proceedings upon instruction from the judge.
  3. Transports, sets up, and maintains personal Court reporting or voice writing equipment at the designated work location.
  4. Identifies speakers properly and notes the introduction of exhibits or evidence.
  5. Receives and processes transcript requests, estimates cost, and prepares and produces transcripts and copies of transcripts in a timely manner as required by applicable code sections, Rules of Court, and statutes for the requesting parties.
  6. Reports proceedings, which may include criminal, conservatorship, mental competency hearings, civil and criminal contempt, juvenile, family law and writs (i.e. of mandated, prohibition and habeas corpus).
  7. Attends staff and other work-related meetings, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education opportunities.
  8. Serves as a representative of the Court, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration and discretion in all interactions with other members of the Court community and with the public.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of Court Reporting.
  • Legal, medical and administrative terminology, phraseology, documents, and procedures.
  • Grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.
  • Court reporting and transcription equipment.
  • Courtroom operations, procedures, and protocol.
  • Laws, regulations, and practice relating to Court reporting and transcription.
Skill/Ability to:
  • Stenographically report or voice write at the speed and accuracy specified for licensing by the State of California.
  • Type at a speed of 50 words per minute.
  • Use correct English and proofread accurately.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information that is sensitive in nature.
  • Prioritize work in order to meet departmental deadlines.
  • Report Court proceedings verbatim continuously for prolonged periods of time.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Listen to and understand conversations of the court to prepare a verbatim record.
  • Be patient, tactful and courteous when dealing with judges and officers of the Court, the public and co-workers.
  • Transcribe Court proceedings accurately from Court reporting notes.
  • Adjust to changes in workloads and work under the stress of meetings deadlines.
  • Ability to write and read back verbatim Court procedure on demand.
  • Operate a computer and other related office equipment.
  • Punctually arrive at work area to prepare for Court proceedings.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possession of Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license issued by the Court Reporters Board of California, in accordance with Government Code Section 69942. License may be obtained through the use of stenography, voice writing, or both.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license.
