Who We Are

The Modern Classrooms Project is a fast‑growing 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers educators to build classrooms that respond to every student’s needs. Founded by two award‑winning teachers, we lead a movement of educators in implementing a differentiated, mastery‑based instructional model that leverages technology to foster human connection, authentic learning, and social‑emotional growth. To date, our free online course and structured training programs have empowered almost 100,000 educators nationwide and globally. We’ve partnered with schools and districts nationwide to train and support both teachers and administrators, and researchers from Johns Hopkins University found “overwhelming positive support” for our approach. We are an ambitious, idealistic team and we are passionate about what we do.

Job Description - Why we need you!

Two years ago, we made a focused bet on math, because math is where this model does some of its best work. Mastery is how the subject is learned: one idea solid before the next. To continue the work we’ve begun, we need to build the right mix of content, technology, and implementation services to strengthen middle school math instruction, improve outcomes for students, and make teaching a more sustainable profession.
That’s where you come in. Alongside our leadership team, you’ll define what great middle school math content looks like, help build it, and own the bar for quality. Do it well, and your work won’t live in a single classroom. It’ll reach hundreds of thousands of students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design lessons for the MCP instructional approach. Shape how a lesson unfolds, using practice, activities, and checks for understanding that move students from first exposure to mastery.
  • Set and hold the quality bar. Judge lessons against a high standard for mathematical accuracy, alignment to learning science, and usability. Decide what is ready for students and what is not.
  • Make great teaching explicit. Take what an expert teacher does intuitively and write it down precisely: the structure, the worked examples, the predictable misconceptions, the exact moves that make a concept land. Make it repeatable.
  • Put AI to work. Use AI tools as part of how the content gets made: write the prompts and specifications that guide them, review and revise what comes back, and bring the judgment to know when it is right and when it is not. The tools move fast; you own the judgment.
  • Design for the students who arrive behind. Build in the activation of prerequisite knowledge, the scaffolds, and the on‑ramps that give every student a real path to grade‑level math.
  • Partner across the team. Work closely with the VP of Product on the overall approach, and with engineering on the tools you build with.
You Should Apply If
  • You were or are an outstanding math teacher. You’ve spent years teaching middle school math, and ideally beyond, with a track record of moving students who were behind up to grade level.
  • You know the math cold. You have deep content knowledge across middle school mathematics and understand how each idea sets up the next, all the way into algebra.
  • You build from the science of learning. You have deep expertise in the science of how kids learn and understand how to apply it to instructional content in math.
  • You have designed math content. You’ve designed instruction to be used by educators, not just designed for your own instruction. You understand scope and sequence, lessons, units, assessments, and full courses. You hold strong, specific opinions about what separates excellent math instruction from the mediocre.
  • You can make the implicit explicit. You can take great instruction and specify it precisely enough that someone, or something, else can reproduce it faithfully.
  • You are AI‑native, or ready to be. You’re excited to use AI tools to do great work far faster than a traditional approach could, and you bring the judgment to steer them well and catch what they get wrong.
  • You are self‑directed. You thrive in small, high‑autonomy teams where the surface area is broad and the context shifts constantly. You write clearly and own a problem end to end without waiting to be told what to do next.
  • You love to learn. You’re actively following developments in both math instruction and AI, and applying them to your own and others’ work. You’re motivated by MCP’s mission and eager to build something that teachers and students rely on.
Compensation and Benefits

We aim to offer a competitive compensation package, as well as the opportunity to work in a fast‑growing nonprofit that is on a mission to improve education worldwide. This includes:

  • Salaried position: $150,000 - $175,000 gross salary per year
  • Employer-sponsored health insurance through CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield
  • Employer-sponsored dental and vision insurance and ancillary benefits through MetLife
  • Participation in Vanguard 403(b) deferred‑compensation plan with 3% employer match
  • Paid Time Off, inclusive of: vacation/PTO (20 days), paid holidays, paid parental leave, sick and safe paid time off, Me Days, and the ability to earn paid Comp time off
  • Annual budget for MCP‑funded Continuous Learning for the program(s) you request (available after 6 months of continuous full‑time employment)
  • FSA and Dependent Care FSA access
  • 1x Salary Life Insurance company‑paid coverage
  • Access to Wishbone Pet Insurance Benefit
  • Ability to work remotely and to set your own hours (within reason)
