SUMMARY:

Under the general guidance of the Director of Support Services, the Courier is responsible for providing pick-up and delivery service of various materials, including chemotherapy medications, laboratory specimens, and medical office records, correspondence and supplies, between CCSI facilities and other entities in a timely and efficient manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Drives personal vehicle or company car for pick-up and delivery service for CCSI in various weather conditions. Safely operates and maintains vehicle and considers traffic patterns, regulations, driving conditions and determines alternative routes as necessary to ensure timely courier service.
  • Picks up, handles and delivers a variety of items, including time-sensitive medications, laboratory specimens, linens, supplies, billing forms, other packages and documents, in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensures pick-up and delivery service from and to various facilities as assigned.
  • Checks courier slots at each facility to ensure pick-up service, including courier slots at a given CCSI location and can include the following areas: laboratory, billing office, transcription, main office area, pharmacy, radiation therapy, research department, CT PET, etc.
  • Ensures items are appropriately sorted and delivered to appropriate areas and/or staff at each facility, including completion of applicable delivery/check-in procedures.
  • Ensures proper handling and care of items during pick-up, transport, and delivery.
  • Ensures appropriate safety, environmental, and infection control methods during pick-up, transport, and delivery.
  • Complies with all applicable safety and health regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Has been trained and is knowledgeable of how to handle hazardous materials and emergency procedures for spills.
  • Assists with other duties, as assigned.

  • Maintains professional relationships and conveys relevant information to other members of the health care team.
  • Internal Contacts: Office staff, physicians, nursing staff, laboratory staff, pharmacy staff, radiation therapy staff, billing representatives, and other staff at CCSI facilities.
  • External Contacts: Staff at hospital facilities and incidental contact with patients and other external contacts.
  • Communicates appropriate information to supervisors, physicians, and/or other members of the healthcare team as needed.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

High school graduate or equivalent. Valid Illinois driver’s license and current auto insurance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF JOB:

Standing, walking, sitting, riding, climbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, twisting, reaching, handling, kneeling, and wrist and digital dexterity. Speaking, hearing, and visual acuity to receive and interpret instructions; communicate with other health care professionals; and operate motor vehicle. Exerting force (frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally more) to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including medications, laboratory specimens, linens, supplies, billing forms, packages and documents, etc.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to work and drive under stress and adapt to changing conditions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Job duties involve travel in motor vehicle and moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, weather conditions, etc. Normal medical office environment. Job duties involve potential for exposure to blood and body fluids due to transport of laboratory specimens and potential for exposure to chemotherapy and other hazardous substances, due to transport of medications. Special protective equipment must be used in case of hazardous substance spill cleanup.
