Job Title: Guidance Counselor

School/Student Services Department | State Salary Scale | FLSA Exempt | No Supervises | Directs: Director of Student Services | 10 months employment.

Qualifications

Masters Level School Counselor License.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides direct services through the Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student Planning, Preventive and Responsive Services.
  • Provides program management, system support and accountability.
  • Establishes the school counseling program and develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program.
  • Involves other school staff in making decisions about the school counseling program.
  • Provides individual and group counseling services to meet developmental, preventive and remedial needs of students.
  • Consults with students, parents, teachers and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students.
  • Coordinates all counseling services for students and assists with coordination and implementation of student services in the school.
  • Assists teachers with the Guidance Curriculum.
  • Accurately interprets test results and other student data.
  • Assists teachers with the educational placement of students using appropriate assessment strategies.
  • Adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession and abides by laws, policies and procedures governing schools.
  • Participates in professional associations and upgrades professional knowledge and skills as needed.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements

Light physical work requiring up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly. Must be able to prepare, read and comprehend a variety of job‑related forms, reports, spreadsheets, plans, records and correspondence in all languages required by the job; understand and conform to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style; speak with poise, voice control and confidence; respond adequately to inquiries or complaints; write using standard conventions; apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems and draw valid conclusions; apply common sense to carry out instructions; communicate effectively using any communication device or system required; use, interpret and operate a variety of automated office machines, printing, graphic arts, audiovisual and communication devices, and job‑specific equipment; operate a motor vehicle; adapt under stress and deal with emergency situations; be sensitive to cultural differences; and handle people beyond giving and receiving instructions.

Work environment: Indoors, minimal noise, within a school setting.
