Job summary

Amity Foundation is seeking a Registered/Certified Substance Abuse Counselor I to deliver face-to-face rehabilitative programming in ISUDT within a state prison. This full-time, non-exempt position focuses on facilitating evidence-based classes, casework, and progress documentation.

You will collaborate with prison staff, ensure participant safety and confidentiality, and maintain professional standards while supporting inmates’ rehabilitation goals.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of substance abuse causes and effects across behavioral, psychological, physical and social dimensions.
  • Knowledge of ISUDTP contractual requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate CBI classes using evidence-based curricula.
  • Conduct classes and individual sessions to develop release prevention/action plans.
  • Evaluate and document participants progress in classes.
  • Document delivery of CBI programming in ARMS.
  • Engage participants daily and reinforce group norms and participation expectations.
  • Collaborate with CDCR/CCHCS headquarters, local institutions, and contracted staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Contractor.

About the Position:

As a Registered/Certified Substance Abuse Counselor I, you will support the community by delivering face-to-face rehabilitative programming services provided in the Integrated Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program (ISUDT).

What You Will Do
Essential Duties:
  • Facilitate CBI classes, using evidence-based and standardized curriculum to the participants.
  • Conduct class and facilitate individual sessions to develop release prevention/action plans and/or provide make-up work.
  • Evaluate and document the progress of participants assigned to their classes.
  • Document delivery of CBI programming services in ARMS.
  • Engage participants daily and reinforce group norms and expectations for participations and completion.
  • Work collaboratively with the CDCR/CCHCS headquarters, local institution, and CDCR contracted staff.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Contractor.
What You Will Bring
Required:

Counselor I: Must be registered with an organization approved by DHCS and obtain their AOD certification within five (5) years of registration date.

Skills/Abilities:
  • Understanding of causes, symptoms, and effects of substance abuse; appreciation for the behavioral, psychological, physical and social effects of drug abuse.
  • Knowledge of contractual requirements of ISUDTP is essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills.
  • Operational knowledge of MS Office Suite and ARMS.
  • Ability to maintain sensitivity and objectivity under pressures generated by association with substance abuse treatment participants.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior in order to maintain professional standards and safeguard the participants.
  • Protect and maintain program participants’ health, safety, welfare, and confidentiality of records and participant information.

Physical Requirements:
  • Occasionally adjusts or moves objects up to 50lbs. in all directions.
  • Constantly remains in a stationary position often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Repeats motions that may include the wrists, hands and / or fingers.
  • Constantly moves from one work yard to another daily.
  • Frequently walks on hard or uneven surfaces.
  • Required to communicate verbally and in written form.
  • Uses all types of vision, such as close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception, to complete daily tasks.
  • Assesses the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Occasionally required to climb, bend, stretch, reach or stoop.
  • Required to wear comfortable and location appropriate clothing and shoes.
Mental Demands:
  • Ability to change directions as a priorities shift.
  • Ability to thrive in environment that require the ability to adapt to changing circumstances,
  • Ability to cope with occasionally difficult or temperamental students and faculty.
  • Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress related to the position.
Work Conditions:
  • Generally, in an indoor setting.
  • Occasionally works in outdoor elements such as precipitation, snow and wind.
  • Work is in an incarcerated setting.
Environmental Conditions:
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be loud.
  • The temperature in the work environment is generally moderate however can range from hot to cold seasonally.
  • Seldom may be exposed to non-lethal chemical agents as administered in necessary use of force security instances.
Travel:
  • Occasionally travels locally and operates motor vehicles.
