Job summary

Amity Foundation seeks compassionate individuals to join our In-Prison programs as a Registered/Certified Substance Abuse Counselor I. The role focuses on delivering rehabilitative services within the Integrated Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program.

The position requires providing group and individual sessions, developing treatment plans, and maintaining confidential participant records in a correctional setting. Certification in AOD or DHCS/BBS recognition is preferred.

Qualifications

• Experience or certification in substance use disorder treatment (SUDT) or related field.
• Certification or registration with a recognized AOD certifying body (e.g., DHCS-recognized, BBS) or equivalent.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience in or willingness to work in correctional/inmate settings.

Responsibilities

• Deliver face-to-face rehabilitative programming services to participants in ISUDTP.
• Lead and participate in group and individual sessions using motivational interviewing, CBT, and other therapies.
• Develop and implement treatment/action plans with participants.
• Review and document treatment progress and maintain confidential records.
• Prepare accurate reports and ensure compliance with program and clinical rules.

About the Position:

The Counselor I (Apprentice) is responsible for the delivery of face-to-face rehabilitative programming services provided in the Integrated Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program (ISUDTP).

What You Will Do:

• Deliver treatment programming services to participants and conduct group and/or individual sessions.
• Effectively implement scheduled program curriculum as required by contract. Leads and participates in face-to-face group and individual meetings utilizing motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy and other therapeutic processes.
• Engage participants daily, reinforce group rules and expectation for participation and completion.
• Works directly with participants to develop and implement treatment/action plans and educate participants about supportive networks as they return to the community.
• Review treatment plans, evaluate and record treatment progress, records visible changes in appearance, behavior and demeanor of program participants.
• Maintains accurate, timely, and confidential participant records. Evaluates and documents the progress of participants assigned to their groups.
• Completes all delivery documentation requirements per contractual obligations in ARMS. Summarizes participants’ background, treatment plan, and recovery process outcomes.
• Prepares accurate, concise, informative reports, records and plans that are consistent with Amity standards, and complies with applicable clinical and administrative rules.
• Liaise with transition/reentry staff, plans and prepares transitional documents as directed by CDCR for continued community program activities.
• Works collaboratively with CDCR, DRP, CCHCS and institution staff. Supports and collaborates co-faculty, including but not limited to Supervisors, Directors and Regional Directors.
• Other duties as assigned.

What you Will Bring:

Required:

Counselor I must meet one (1) of the following requirements:

• Less than one (1) years of experience providing SUDT services as a certified AOD Counselor; OR
• Registered with an AOD certifying organization recognized by DHCS, enrolled in AOD education classes, and six (6) months of experience providing CBI services.

Certifications or Licenses:

Required

• Current AOD Certification with organization recognized by the DHCS OR Registration with BBS or AOD certifying body; depending on education level. Preferred: NONE

Skills/Abilities:

• Understanding of causes, symptoms, and effects of substance abuse; appreciation for the behavioral, psychological, physical and social effects of drug abuse.
• Knowledge of contractual requirements of ISUDTP is essential.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills.
• Operational knowledge of MS Office Suite and ARMS.
• Ability to maintain sensitivity and objectivity under pressures generated by association with substance abuse treatment participants.
• Demonstrate ethical behavior in order to maintain professional standards and safeguard the participants.
• Protect and maintain program participants’ health, safety, welfare, and confidentiality of records and participant information.

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be loud.
• The temperature in the work environment is generally moderate however can range from hot to cold seasonally.
• Seldom may be exposed to non-lethal chemical agents as administered in necessary use of force security instances.

Travel:

• Occasionally travels locally and operates motor vehicles.

$28 - $28 an hour
