Purpose Statement

The job of Counselor is to support student academic, educational, and social/emotional processes with responsibilities including managing schedules and placements, providing curriculum information and recommendations to students and parents, and assisting in the development of goal plans.

This position reports to the Principal.

Essential Functions
  • Attend meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire and convey information relevant to job functions.
  • Coordinate with teachers, college/university personnel, resource specialists and community organizations to provide or receive requested information and make recommendations.
  • Counsel students, parents and guardians to enhance student success and refer them to support services when needed.
  • Develop special programs (career nights, financial aid workshops) to provide information for students' academic, educational, social/behavioral, and transitional stages.
  • Monitor student progress to identify issues and take actions that increase student success.
  • Prepare student applications (scholarships, college, financial aid) to ensure completion within designated time frames.
  • Prepare materials (quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits) for documenting activities and conveying information.
  • Present information (budget overviews, accounting processes, distribution formulas) to communicate information, gain feedback, and ensure adherence to internal controls.
  • Research program eligibility requirements (financial aid, college eligibility) to provide up‑to‑date counsel.
  • Schedule student classes to secure appropriate placement and meet graduation and college eligibility requirements.
  • Supervise assigned programs (scholarships, peer counseling, special education, ESL) to monitor performance, provide professional growth, and achieve curriculum objectives.
Other Functions
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Guidance/Counseling, Special Education, Education or related field preferred.
  • College degree in a related field required.
  • Job‑related experience in an educational setting required.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
  • Relevant certifications: Counseling Certificate preferred, Secondary/Elementary Teaching Credential, CPR/First Aid Certificate.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Apply assessment instruments, prepare and maintain accurate records, plan and manage projects, use relevant software, facilitate meetings, promote activities and events.
  • Knowledge of child development stages, assessment instruments and techniques, cultural differences among students, job‑related codes/laws/regulations/policies, and community resources.
  • Ability to schedule activities, analyze data, work independently with others, solve problems, maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines, set priorities, work as part of a team, and handle interruptions.
Working Conditions

Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and fine finger dexterity. The position involves approximately 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. Work occurs under minimal temperature variations. The role is 11‑month and classified as full‑time.

Salary

$54,000 to $77,790 per year. Exempt Certified Salary Schedule.
