Job summary

Buc-ee's, Ltd. in Pearland is seeking a Counsel to assist the Deputy General Counsel Litigation with a focus on premises liability defense, including trial participation and voir dire experience.

This in-office role requires a JD, Texas license or eligibility within one year, and a strong litigation background, including complex commercial matters and discovery management. Collaboration across departments is essential.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school is required.
• Licensed to practice law in Texas or eligible to become licensed within one year.
• 5 years of relevant litigation experience, premises liability defense preferred.
• Experience with complex commercial litigation, drafting pleadings and motions.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office; Lexis and Westlaw proficiency.

Overview

The Counsel will assist the Deputy General Counsel Litigation. This position requires a strong background in premise defense, commercial litigation, including courtroom presence, trial participation, and voir dire experience.

NOTE: This is an IN-OFFICE opportunity only, located in the SH 288 and Hwy 518 area.

The essential job functions include, but are not limited to:

• Work on dispute and litigation matters, with a primary focus on premises liability defense, including investigation, legal research and writing, drafting and reviewing pleadings, motions, and discovery, preparing for and participating in hearings, trials, and appeals
• Work on litigation discovery processes, including supervising and implementing legal holds and document collection
• Research, prepare guidance, and offer legal counsel on compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including privacy, data security, consumer rights, employment, operations, and other areas
• Identify potential legal risks particularly related to premises liability exposure, and develop strategies to mitigate them. Assist in the development and implementation of company policies and procedures
• Research specific legal issues and share results with legal team or business unit
• Assist other attorneys in the legal department with a variety of matters
• Collaborate with all departments to deliver timely and responsive legal services
• Maintain familiarity with current and proposed laws and regulations and case guidance involving all assigned matters
• Maintain organized files and track critical deadlines for a variety of matters
• Use and increase knowledge of contract legal management, matter management, and other company software platforms
• It is an essential function of this job for the employee to work in office/in the employee’s assigned work site. No remote work is available

The position requirements include, but are not limited to:

• The Counsel must be licensed to practice law in Texas or be licensed in another state and be eligible to become licensed in Texas within one year
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school is required
• Significant hands‑on litigation experience, with a strong emphasis on premises liability defense, including courtroom presence, drafting and arguing motions, participating in hearings and trials, and conducting or assisting with voir dire is required
• 5 years of relevant legal experience. Experience at a large national firm is preferred
• Prior experience with complex commercial litigation, including drafting pleadings and motions is required
• Prior experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements is required
• Proficient skill level with Microsoft Applications is required
• Proficient skill level with Lexis and Westlaw is required
