Job summary

New York Edge is seeking a Cosmetology Specialist to organize, lead, and promote interest in Cosmetology for students in Queens. The instructor will model professional behavior, adapt lessons to the NY State Arts Learning Standards, and plan sequential activities within the New York Edge curriculum.

The role requires delivering instruction in nail technology and hair styling, maintaining safety, and guiding students toward a final project.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
• Minimum one year of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience required.
• Minimum one year of teaching experience required.
• Passion for New York Edge's mission and youth development.
• Candidates qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity are preferred.

Responsibilities

• Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students.
• Organize, lead, and promote interest in arts activities such as Cosmetology.
• Organize performance groups and direct their rehearsals.
• Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
• Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the student’s needs.
• Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
• Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants and demonstrate materials and equipment.
• Evaluate activities to determine if they are producing desired results.
• Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests.
• Progressive development of student skills leading to a final project
• Other duties as assigned

SUMMARY

New York Edge is seeking passionate and enthusiastic people to fill the role of Cosmetology Specialist. In this role, you will organize, lead, and promote interest in various Cosmetology . The instructor will serve as a model and a source of inspiration for students and aspiring cosmetologists. Cosmetology specialists are responsible for sequential lesson planning based on the New York Edge curriculum, classroom preparation for Cosmetology teaching and holding students to established standards, and adapting the New York State Arts Learning Standards to create an engaging and rewarding activity that encourages participation in New York Edge programs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

REQUIRED SKILLS

• Must be knowledgeable and skilled in a variety of cosmetology
• Prior experience teaching and instructing youth preferred
• Must be able to follow a curriculum
• Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual!
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required
• Instructs, manages, and supervises students in the classroom and the beauty space.
• Teaches a variety of courses in nail technology, hair styling, and other beautifying arts while lecturing on the theory, techniques, and terminology used in the cosmetology profession
• Organizes a program of practical and technical instruction, including demonstrations of skills used by hairstylists, manicurists, make-up artists, and other workers in the beauty industry
• Prepares outline of instructional lesson plan and assembles materials to be presented
• Evaluates the student’s understanding of the learning objectives via careful performance and execution of the hands-on activities
• Maintains desirable classroom conditions and a student-oriented approach
• May be required to walk up and down stairs.
• May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed.

WORK SCHEDULE

• 9-15 hours per week.
• Monday through Friday -- 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

The Cosmetology Specialist must report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration.

At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
