Job summary

Missouri Department of Corrections is seeking candidates for positions focused on maintaining security within correctional facilities and supervising offender activity. Roles include monitoring movement, conducting counts, searches for contraband, and transporting offenders to designated locations.

Special requirements include passing a background check and completing Defensive Tactics and First Aid/CPR training. Some posts may require firearms certification and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Ability to pass a background investigation.
• Ability to complete Defensive Tactics and Standard First Aid/CPR training during Basic Training.
• By assignment, may require firearms certification training.
• Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

Responsibilities

• Maintains security in buildings or posts of an adult correctional facility; intervenes during emergencies or altercations and gains physical control of offenders.
• Supervises movement of offenders inside/outside the facility; conducts periodic counts; searches for contraband; escorts/transports offenders to predetermined locations.
• Supervises offenders in housing units and during work activities, recreation, or religious activities.
• Conducts inspections for health and safety hazards; prepares/submits reports on offender violations or security issues.
• Discusses minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to proper staff; promotes rehabilitation and discourages undesirable behaviors.
• Performs work under established rules and general administrative direction; may perform other related work as assigned.
