Position

Corrections Officer – County of Hamilton, Indiana – Full‑Time, Non‑Exempt – Hourly Rate: $28.84… per hour.

Responsibilities

• Maintain security and order in the jail, government and judicial center, historic courthouse, and transport facilities.
• Monitor activities, surveillance cameras, door controls, meals, visitors, and conduct patrols.
• Perform accurate inmate accounting, booking, photographing/video taping, fingerprinting, and secure handling of money and personal property.
• Execute control‑room duties: monitoring alarms, cameras, coordinating transports, dispatching personnel, answering telephone, and notifying building personnel of emergencies (bomb threats, severe weather).
• Control and supervise inmate movements, escorting inmates, witnesses, jurors, and visitors; mediate disputes and handle firearms safety.
• Respond to emergency security and medical calls, conduct sobriety tests, search and seize contraband, and issue citations for improper parking.
• Perform bonding procedures, release inmates, and maintain receipt of bond money and personal belongings.
• Collect and distribute prison mail, examine and log incoming/outgoing items.
• Assist Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) duties: routine security checks and report writing.
• Supervise and direct inmate workers, record case/incident reports, and prepare required reports for department deadlines.
• Operate commissary, handle orders, record cash, and purchases.
• Deliver legal documents such as summonses, orders, warrants, and notices, and serve documents as assigned.
• Maintain vehicles, equipment, uniforms, weapons, and other resources.
• Transport inmates to courts, medical appointments, DOC, other detention facilities, extradition, and juvenile treatment centers; coordinate with law‑enforcement agencies.
• Assist with elections security and absentee ballot delivery.
• Conduct other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED and completion of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Corrections Officer certification within specified time.
• Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
• Passing score in the Handgun Course of Fire (if issued a firearm).
• Completion of required state and department training and certifications.
• Knowledge and application of CPR, first aid, universal health precautions, proper use of medical equipment (defibrillator, breathing apparatus, etc.), and drug‑free workplace policies.
• Ability to use and maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, uniforms, weapons, cameras, radios, and computers.
• Ability to handle physical demands: lifting >50 lbs, running short distances, restraining inmates.
• Effective communication, de‑escalation, and negotiation skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work weekends, evenings, and irregular hours; occasional overnight travel; 24‑hour on‑call duty.
• Understanding of and compliance with written orders, department policies, safety protocols, and confidentiality requirements.

Medical & Safety

Employees must begin a three‑shot Hepatitis B vaccination series within 10 days of assignment per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030(f)(2)(i). Temporary medical declination may be granted up to six months with a written declaration.
