Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Corrections seeks a Corrections Officer Trainee to begin a career dedicated to public safety. This position provides hands-on training and steady support as you learn how to maintain safety and order within a state correctional facility.

You will perform duties such as inmate contact, monitoring movement, conducting rounds, preparing detailed reports, and responding to emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Interact with inmates and visitors in direct and indirect situations
• Monitor inmate movement and activities in cellblocks, housing units, work areas, dining spaces, and recreation areas to maintain security
• Make periodic and unannounced rounds, conduct head counts, complete security checks, and report unusual situations
• Full-time shifts; 40-hour work week with shifts determined; work weekends and holidays as required and report to work in adverse weather
• Participate in formalized instruction in sociology, psychology, court procedures, self-defense, leadership, custodial responsibilities, and organizational structure
• Offer guidance to inmates adjusting to correctional processes and agency rules
• Write and complete detailed reports
• Act quickly and safely during emergencies
• Wear employer-provided uniforms
• Follow promotion provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum
