Job summary

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office is hiring a Corrections Officer to oversee inmates at the South Lafourche Substation in accordance with established policies and procedures. This role requires POST certification, firearm certification, and a valid Louisiana driver’s license.

It includes 12-hour rotating night shifts, and duties such as reporting, equipment maintenance, and coordination with other agencies.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or equivalent from a university or college; or six (6) months to one (1) year related experience and/or training; or, equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
• P.O.S.T. Certification Required.
• Firearm Certification Required Annually.
• Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Place personal restraints on inmates during transport.
• Observe inmate conduct to prevent disturbances and escapes.
• Supervise and direct inmates to holding locations.
• Monitor inmate behavior for infractions and rule violations.
• Prepare written reports on incidents of disturbances or injuries.
• Operate radios and communicate with supervisors during shifts.
• Maintain weapons and equipment in functional condition.

CORRECTIONS OFFICE AT SOUTH LAFOURCHE SUBSTATION (POST CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)

Schedule: 12-hour straight nights, 7 day on/7 days off

Salary range: $37,800.00–$57,000.00.

This range does not include State Supplemental Pay.

Salary range: $45,000.00-$64,200.00.

This range includes State Supplemental Pay for employees who are P.O.S.T. Level I or Level II certified.

Additional pay differentials are available for college education, military service, and prior law enforcement experience.

JOB SUMMARY

A “Corrections Officer” supervises inmates assigned to the South Lafourche Substation in accordance with established policies, regulations, and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Place personal restraints such as handcuffs on inmates for transporting;
• Observe conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes;
• Supervise and direct inmates to appropriate holding locations;
• Monitor inmate behavior and actions for evidence of prohibited activities, infraction of rules, and unsatisfactory attitude;
• Report observations to supervisors;
• Employ weapons or physical force to maintain discipline and order among inmates, if necessary;
• Escort inmates to and from holding and cell areas;
• Prepare written reports concerning incidents of inmate disturbances or injuries;
• Operate radio to receive instructions and notify supervisors of work efforts in progress;
• Maintain weapons and equipment in functional and clean condition;
• Report malfunctions in facility equipment to supervisors for corrective action;
• Accompany medical personnel in conducting medical examinations;

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Answer incoming telephone calls and route to appropriate personnel;
• Provide guidance and training to newly assigned correctional officers;
• Cooperate with efforts of other law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations and joint law enforcement efforts;
• Assist in providing warnings to the general public before, during, and after emergencies/disasters; and, assist in the facilitation of public evacuation efforts;
• Perform all other duties of a “Transportation Officer,” as needed;
• Perform the duties of a “Deputy,” as needed;

Other Skills and Abilities

Must possess basic knowledge of technical and professional methods, practices, and procedures in the delivery of law enforcement services; and, possess basic skills in the operation of computers and copy machines; basic knowledge of computer word processing software, business English, spelling, punctuation, and methods and techniques in record keeping and filing systems required;

Must have the emotional stability, maturity, and physical stamina and ability to effectively handle verbal disparagements and physical aggression from hostile individuals, inmates, and criminal suspects and perpetrators;

Must possess the ability to perform job duties in highly stressful situations;

Must have the ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public, governmental officials, and other employees of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office;

Must be able to work on 12-hour rotating shifts;
