Job summary

Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel, LA is seeking an Assistant Chief of Security for Unit 2 to supervise security staff, manage shift operations, and respond to critical incidents 24/7.

The role requires leadership of Majors, Captains, Lieutenants, and cadets within multiple teams and facilities. You will enforce rules, coordinate inmate management, and support compliance with ACA standards while maintaining schedules and training for unit personnel.

Qualifications

• Four years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Possession of a current driver's license.
• An applicant convicted of certain crimes may be disqualified per PREA requirements.

Responsibilities

• Respond to significant institutional unusual occurrences as defined by policies.
• Ensure compliance with department and ACA standards.
• Oversee inmate hygiene, stock, inventory, and equipment for Unit 2.

The incumbent of this position serves as the Assistant Chief of Security over Unit 2, which includes front gate, Fox 3, 4, 5, and 6, as well as Golf 3, D-2 kitchen, gym, J Building, Call-out building, and hobby shop. The incumbent is responsible for inmates and for the supervision of all Corrections Majors, Corrections Captains, Corrections Lieutenants, Corrections Master Sergeant’s, Corrections Sergeant’s, and Cadets on A, B, C, and D Teams assigned to Unit 2. The incumbent of this position is on 24-hour call.

Four years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following:

• 1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR
• 2. One year of experience in any field; OR
• 3. Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer.

One year of this experience must have been in a position equivalent in scope of responsibility or complexity of work performed to a Corrections Captain in State service.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current driver's license.

Job Duties

• Respond to significant institutional unusual occurrences as defined by Institutional/Departmental policies.
• Insure that all Departmental and Institutional rules, regulations, policies, procedures and life code are enforced and followed, as well as requirements for ACA Standards compliance.
• Insure that inmate hygiene, cleaning and clothing supplies are ordered, stocked, inventoried, maintained, issued, and recorded where necessary.
• Maintain sick leave and vacation leave records on all officers assigned to Unit 2. Approve or deny all vacations and k-days for subordinates.
• Assist and instruct as necessary at in-service training programs.

Appointment Type: PROBATION, or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE

• Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
• An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
• This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

Compensation: This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $37.32 per hour.
