Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Corrections Food Service Officer oversees and participates in the preparation of nutritionally balanced meals in accordance with safety and sanitary procedures.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provides training and instruction to inmates in meal production, safe food handling, and kitchen sanitation; supervises and implements corrective and disciplinary actions to ensure task are being performed appropriately and safely.
  • Oversees tray, snack, and menu meal production and transport; manages special diet configuration; verifies daily inventory by tracking items on daily menus.
  • Uses system computer to review and update special diet orders; prints snack and diet labels.
  • Tracks inmate movement, changes, and updates within the jail using the Offender Management System (OMS).
  • Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Standards for Initial Consideration

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:

High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND one (1) years of experience in large scale food service or preparation; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Sanitary food preparation practices and standards.
  • Supervisory principles and practices.
  • Food service and safety standards, regulations, and procedures.
  • Kitchen tools, equipment, machinery, and cleaning chemicals.

Skill in:

  • Preparing and cooking balanced meals that meet dietary guidelines and requirements.
  • Providing effective supervision and direction to inmate workers.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with County staff, inmates, and outside agencies.
  • Managing and controlling food costs and inventory to meet budget guidelines.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing
Supplemental Information

License and Certification Requirements

Must possess a Basic Jail Training certificate or obtain certification within one (1) year of hire.

Must possess a ServSafe certification or obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Work is performed in correctional kitchen and food preparation areas and requires exposure to hot and cold temperatures; dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery; hazardous chemicals and potentially violent inmates.

May be required to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
