Job summary

Scott County is seeking a Corrections Custodial Officer to maintain a clean and safe environment at the Scott County Jail. You will supervise inmate workers, assist with laundry, and manage inventories and safety protocols under general supervision.

Responsibilities include escorting inmates on approved tasks, documenting repairs, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role requires a valid driver's license and a basic jail training certificate within one year

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and one year of maintenance, lawn care, or custodial experience.
  • Knowledge of safety policies, proper handling of chemicals, and institutional cleaning methods.

  • Monitors chemical inventories and coordinates supply orders with staff.
  • Oversees laundry processes, clothes distribution, and bedroll preparation.
  • Assists with bloodborne pathogens cleanup and maintains safety practices.
  • Supervises haircut and bicycle programs for inmates and manages tool check-in/out.
  • Demonstrates County PRIDE and performs related duties as assigned.

Job description

Under general supervision, the Corrections Custodial Officer maintains a clean and sanitary environment in the Scott County Jail. Provides support and assistance where needed and when called upon by a Correctional Officer.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Supervises inmate workers cleaning secured portions of the jail to include holding cells in booking, classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and sally ports; verifies laundry inmate workers have adequate work supplies.
  • Escorts inmate workers out into the community to perform tasks such as raking leaves, mulching, working in the garden, mowing, and other special projects; provides training for all new inmate workers and files the documentation as necessary.
  • Reviews and monitors submitted maintenance requests; reviews and gathers necessary tools and supplies to complete requests; documents repairs and updates requests once completed.
  • Monitors and documents the inventory of all chemicals and other items necessary inmate workers and Corrections Custodial Officers to complete work tasks; forwards information regarding supply needs to appropriate staff to be ordered.
  • Assists with the laundry process, transports inmate workers to the work site, oversees the washer and dryer machinery while in operation, directs preparation and distribution of clean clothes, maintains the preparation area, instructs/trains the workers on how the laundry is distributed, makes out laundry tags and supervises the workers making bedrolls and storing clean clothes.
  • Responsible for the use of safe work practice controls in blood borne pathogens cleanup which includes but is not limited to; blood, bodily fluids and other potentially infectious microorganisms.
  • Supervises the haircut program; escorts protective custody and special handling inmates to the barber; maintains an organized flow to ensure all inmates on the list get haircuts.
  • Supervises the inmate worker bicycle program; escorts inmates out to the annex via a county transport van to work on and build bicycles; checks-in and out tools to inmates.
  • Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND one (1) year of maintenance, lawn care, or custodial experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of:
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Institutional cleaning methods.
  • Common chemicals, tools, and equipment used in general maintenance and lawn care.
Skill in:
  • Providing effective supervision and direction to inmates performing work detail.
  • Maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Monitoring and maintaining inventories.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
License and Certification Requirements
  • Must possess a Basic Jail Training certificate or obtain certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's license.
  • Must maintain a First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification within six (6) months of hire.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Work is performed in correctional facilities and throughout Scott County. May be exposed to dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, outdoor weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, and potential physical harm from violent inmates. May be required to climb ladders, move equipment, lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and to perform defensive tactics.
