Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s State Correctional Institution Chester is seeking a Corrections Counselor 1 to help inmates adjust, build constructive habits, and connect them with programs and guidance for long-term success.

The role includes adjustment support, case documentation, evaluation activities, treatment planning, and parole coordination, with a 40-hour work week, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Qualifications

• Educational and experience requirements listed above
• 30 college credits in related fields may substitute for part of the requirements
• Eligible applicants may meet educational requirements within 3 months of graduation
• Special requirement: CLEAN and JNET certification within two months of employment

Responsibilities

• Adjustment Support: Meet with inmates to discuss concerns, offer direction, and encourage constructive behavior
• Caseload Records: Document case information, prepare reports, and maintain communication with staff
• Evaluation Activities: Review assessments, compile histories, and update files used for programming decisions
• Treatment Planning: Coordinate activities, counseling efforts, and educational services to align with program goals
• Parole Coordination: Support parole preparation, gather identification materials, and assist with reintegration planning

Education

Three years and six months as a corrections officer, 18 college credits in sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or related field

Bachelor’s degree with 18 college credits in sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or related field

Equivalent combination including 18 college credits in related fields

Within 3 months of graduating with qualifying degree/credits
