Job Summary

We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team as a Housing Captain. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated leader to make a meaningful impact in the field of corrections. As a Captain at the South Dakota Department of Corrections, you will be responsible for a range of critical tasks that ensure the smooth operation of our facility. This is a full-time Monday through Friday position, hours to be determined, with a rotating on call duty officer schedule.

Your role will encompass the following duties
  • Staff Schedule Management: Develop, maintain, and coordinate staff schedules, ensuring adequate coverage for all shifts and departments. Manage vacation requests, training schedules, mentorship programs, and on-the-job training (OJT) for staff.
  • Backup to Disciplinary Hearing Officer (DHO): Provide essential support and backup to the Disciplinary Hearing Officer, assisting with disciplinary hearings, investigations, and ensuring due process is followed.
  • FTO Program Development/Management: Design, implement, and oversee a Field Training Officer (FTO) program for new staff members. Ensure comprehensive training, assessment, and mentorship to facilitate their successful integration into the facility.
  • Bid Posting: Manage the bid posting process for staff rotations, promotions, and reassignments, adhering to facility policies and union agreements.
  • Direct Supervision: Supervise and lead various staff members across different departments, ensuring their adherence to facility policies, safety protocols, and effective performance.
  • Unit Management: Be a first-line supervisor on a housing unit. Support offenders by addressing their needs that arise during daily living in a correctional facility. Support staff in providing guidance and supervision of corrections professionals working on a housing unit.
  • Supervise staff and provide support to the Officer in Charge during inmate waking hours including late evenings.
  • Timekeeping System (TKS) Management: Oversee the accurate and efficient use of the Timekeeping System for staff under your direct supervision, ensuring timely and accurate submission of attendance records.
  • Discipline and Mentorship: Provide guidance, mentorship, and disciplinary action as needed for staff under your direct supervision, promoting a positive and productive work environment.
  • Duty Officer Rotation: Participate in duty officer rotations, ensuring that facility operations are maintained at all times, and responding to emergencies and incidents as required.
  • Weekly Reports: Prepare and present weekly operational reports to the Associate Warden of Operations, highlighting key achievements, challenges, and areas of improvement.
  • Participate in weekly Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings, addressing facility needs such as inmate work assignments, clinical services concerns, and security concerns.
  • Participate in use of force reviews, policy reviews, and submit major incident reports as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
  • Successfully pass all modules of the South Dakota Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics and firearms/armed transport curriculum.
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics.
Physical Requirements

  • withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

  • get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
Exposure
  • will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;
  • must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;
  • seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;
  • demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;
  • work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;
  • deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;
  • work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;
  • communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;
  • work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;
  • willing and able to travel;
  • willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;
  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Corrections, or a related field.
  • minimum of 5 years of experience in corrections, with 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.

  • strong understanding of correctional facility operations and regulations.
  • proficiency in MS Office Suite and timekeeping systems.
