Job summary

Coyote Ridge Corrections Center (CRCC) seeks a permanent, full-time Correctional Unit Supervisor to lead an I/I living unit and ensure safety, program delivery, and compliance with DOC policies. The role collaborates with program managers to maintain secure custody and effective reentry planning.

Responsibilities include supervising staff, directing operations, and enforcing standards while coordinating with community partners and law enforcement to uphold safety and program integrity.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED AND five (5) years’ professional corrections; criminal justice experience with (3) years’ progressive supervisory responsibilities, including one (1) year supervising personnel in a criminal justice arena.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide positive leadership in times of stress, conflict, and unforeseen events.
  • Working knowledge of incarcerated individual management and supervision including behavior management, classification process, sanitation, security and safety.

Coyote Ridge Corrections Center (CRCC)

The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill one permanent full-time Correctional Unit Supervisor (CUS) position at Coyote Ridge Corrections Center.

COYOTE RIDGE CORRECTIONS CENTER (CRCC) is located on a 60-acre site about 40 miles north of the Tri-Cities. CRCC is comprised of two-complexes. The Medium Security Complex (MSC) is a 2,048 bed facility that houses Incarcerated Individuals (I/I) with Medium and MI3 Custody. MSC consists of 4 Hybrid units and 4 Medium units. The Minimum Security Unit (MSU) is a 480 bed facility that houses assisted living and MI2 Custody I/I. MSU consists of 2 units. This is a work/program orientated facility that offers many educational, vocational, and self-help programs and Class II and Class III Correctional Industries work programs.

The Department of Corrections (DOC), Prisons Division, in collaboration with its criminal justice partners, contributes to staff and community safety and holds incarcerated individuals (I/Is) accountable in administering criminal sanctions and effective reentry programs. The Correctional Unit Supervisor works collaboratively with the Correctional Program Manager to develop an effective custody and classification program that is cost effective, productive, and safe.

The classification system is designed to promote incarcerated individual participation in work, education, treatment, I/I change, and vocational programming in a manner that results in graduated release through a systematic decrease in supervision and corresponding increase in I/I responsibility and reentry into the community. This position is critical in maintaining core correctional operations by ensuring living units operate safely and in ensuring classification staff prepare I/I for reentry into the community through classification, assessment, program referral and release planning. This position works in collaboration with community corrections, courts, and local law enforcement agencies to ensure that I/I under DOC supervision adhere to appropriate evidence based programming through I/I accountability, so that reentry back into the community is productive and safe.

This position is responsible for supervising I/I, staff and daily operations of an I/I living unit in accordance with Washington Administrative Code (WAC's), DOC policies and facility Operational Memoranda. The management of a living unit includes: (1) providing direct supervision and leadership to Classification Counselors, support staff, and Correctional Sergeants who supervise Correctional Officers; (2) the continuous inspection and review of correctional and security procedures to ensure proper application of directives; (3) analyzing operations and recommending solutions to problems and improvements for efficiency and economy; ensuring all sanitation and security requirements are met; and (4) assisting with the development and implementation of new or updated DOC policies, Operational Memoranda, and facility rules and procedures relating to facility functions and assigned tasks. The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise, monitor and direct the operations of an I/I living unit to include security practices, I/I program assignments, sanitation of the units, and compliance with DOC custody policies and operational memoranda.
  • Direct the security and accountability of I/I assigned to the unit. This ensures the safety of staff, I/I, visitors, volunteers, and the general public.
  • Administer and facilitate the Facility Risk Management Team/ Multidisciplinary Facility Risk Management Team in their review and implementation of classification discussion and recommendations for I/I programming, custody levels, and transition planning. Solicit input from all resources to include the I/I.
  • Ensure the living unit sanitation level is consistent with expectations that are mandated by local, State, County and Federal guidelines and local facility standards.
  • Ensure all safety standards associated with the living unit are consistent with expectations that are mandated by local, State, County and Federal guidelines and local facility standards.
  • Ensure all maintenance standards associated with the operation of the living unit are requested and completed in a timely manner that minimizes the impact on staff work areas and I/I living conditions.
  • Ensure inspections/searches of I/Is, I/I property, and living unit, to include program and other areas of the unit, are completed in accordance with established Department policies and procedures.
  • Plan, direct, and supervise the work of living unit staff, which includes support staff, Counselors, Correctional Officers and Correctional Sergeants.
  • Establish and prioritize performance expectations for staff utilizing core correctional practices.
  • Conduct timely employee performance evaluations and ensure proper training is provided. Recognize good performance and appropriately document in the employee records. Assess staff individually for career development, personal/professional goals, and provide them with training and/or rotational experiences. Provide coaching and mentoring to staff and lead by example.
  • Monitor work performance; investigate and take appropriate corrective or recommend disciplinary action.
  • Ensure all persons supervised by this position read and comply with Department policies, Operational Memoranda and Post Orders/manuals.
  • Participate in the recruitment process and submit recommendations to hire temporary or permanent staff.
  • Plan, direct and monitor unit programs.
  • Coordinate scheduled activities to enable all I/Is the optimum availability for participation.
  • Ensure resource information is made available to I/Is regarding programs and transitional opportunities.
  • Create and support incentive programs and awards to promote unit morale and positive behavior.
  • Oversee, conduct, and/or participate in hearings, investigations, and meetings.
  • Oversee and/or conduct infraction hearings and classification hearings. Ensure all I/I due process rights are afforded and applied in an objective and impartial manner.
  • Oversee and/or conduct investigations pertaining to allegations of staff misconduct, I/I grievances, tort claims, and administrative segregation placements.
  • Chair or serve as a member of committees within the facility.
  • Participate with other management team members to develop, review, and implement policy decisions, strategic plans, and mission statements.
REQUIRED
  • High School diploma or GED AND five (5) years’ professional corrections; criminal justice experience with (3) years’ progressive supervisory responsibilities, including one (1) year supervising personnel in a criminal justice arena.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide positive leadership in times of stress, conflict, and unforeseen events. Remain calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to, volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations. Expertly intervene in response to threats.
  • Working knowledge of incarcerated individual management and supervision including behavior management, classification process, sanitation, security and safety. Understanding of incarcerated individual programs including preparation of individuals for transition back into society.
  • Working knowledge of DOC policies, RCW’s, WAC’s, and Operational Memoranda.
PREFERRED/DESIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES
  • Ability to supervise and train Unit Sergeant(s), Classification Counselor(s), Unit Correctional Officer(s) and support staff.
  • Bachelor or Associates Degree in criminology or a closely allied field from an accredited college/university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or foreign equivalent.

Telework Details

This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
