Qualifications

It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

This position is located at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine, NC. Avery Mitchell is a medium custody male facility. Work in this position involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer II’s in medium-custody facilities or institutions, increasing the custody and security coverage. Position reports to Correctional Lieutenant II.

Key Duties Included:
  • Provide supervision for subordinate staff, conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Complete, review, and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Account for persons and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
  • Assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post, overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade Range: $39,244.00 - $68,679.00. Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented knowledge of facility operations
  • Documented knowledge of Prisons' policy and procedures

About The Division of Institutions

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
