Job summary

Pennington County is seeking a Correctional Officer to ensure care and custody of inmates, handling high-stress situations, and providing testimony when required. The role involves 24/7 shifts, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays.

The position requires completion of academy and on-the-job trainings, fitness and background checks, and the ability to work in a potentially volatile environment while maintaining security and safety protocols.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or GED required.
• Must be at least 20 years of age at offer.
• Completion of in-house 120-hour academy training.
• Completion of 240-hour on-the-job training.
• OC spray and TASER certifications required.
• No felony convictions.
• Ability to pass physical agility, tests, and background checks.
• Must obtain SD driver's license within 90 days of moving to SD.

Responsibilities

• Perform security rounds and document incidents.
• Maintain safe cell block atmosphere and enforce discipline.
• Determine appropriate disciplinary actions and communicate outcomes.
• Monitor inmate movement and respond to abnormal behavior.
• Assess housing classifications and security levels.
• Respond to mental health concerns and suicide precautions.
• Read and process legal and medical documents.
• Communicate clearly with staff, inmates, and in court settings.
• Attend required trainings and shift briefings.
• Perform related duties as assigned and comply with policies.
