Job description

Overview

This entry‑level Correctional Officer position is located in the D.C. Department of Corrections (DOC) Central Detention Facility (DC Jail) and Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF). The incumbent serves in a developmental capacity under the supervision of a Supervisory Correctional Officer and a Training Coordinator. A comprehensive training program includes classroom instruction, demonstrations, selected reading, and on‑the‑job training (OJT) under close supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Enforce regulations governing facility operation, serving as both supervisor and counselor of inmates.
  • Provide custody and security of inmates, observe inmate actions, conduct pat and strip searches, restrain and secure inmates, escort/transports offenders.
  • Submit disciplinary reports on inmate violations and submit reports on illegal or questionable occurrences.
  • Conduct inventory of individual inmate property and document it.
  • Assist in the supervision of inmates in living quarters, visiting hall, during recreational activities, while in transit and during sleeping hours.
  • Count inmates at designated and random times as instructed.
  • Maintain accountability of inmates assigned to work detail.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as escape, suicide, riot and other disturbances in accordance with DOC policies, procedures, rules, regulations and post orders.
Qualifications and Education
  • At least one (1) year of specialized experience directly related to the position, equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to possess and use a firearm; must qualify and remain qualified for firearm usage as a condition of employment for the duration of employment.
Working Conditions and Environment

Work is performed in a correctional facility. Conditions include working inside and outside; around machines with moving parts; radiant and electrical energy; extended or irregular hours; constant noise; excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness, chill, dust, fumes and chemical agents.

Other Significant Facts
  • Must be available for rotational shift work normally requiring rotation on each of the three shifts, seven days per week.
  • Must have a clear criminal background, pass random drug/alcohol screenings, read and interpret written material, possess effective written and oral communication skills, and meet TB testing requirements.
  • Must be U.S. citizen or have at least one (1) year of permanent residency status.
