Job summary

The Western Virginia Regional Jail is seeking applicants for full-time Male & Female Correctional Officers. This entry level role offers a starting salary of $48,853.00 with competitive benefits and incentives, including DCJS certification after academy completion.

Job description

The Western Virginia Regional Jail is seeking applicants for full-time Male & Female Correctional Officers.

The qualified applicants willperform routine protective services work in providing care and maintaining security for inmates being held in the Western VA Regional Jail and processing inmates into custody. We provide a level of supervision, custody, and control that is consistent with the need to protect the community, staff, and inmates. We also provide rehabilitation programs and services that help inmates return to the community as productive citizens.

This is a 12-hour shift position, either a rotating or permanent day or night schedule, based on the needs of the organization at time of hire. Officers work a maximum of 3 days in a row, allowing them more time with family / friends, appointments, and other commitments.

  • Facility Safety and Security (performs activities with security in mind, responds appropriately and according to policy, ensures secure movement within the facility by not overriding doors or interlocks, enforces pod door security and maintains restricted inmate areas)
  • Inmate and Facility Searches (conducts appropriate searches of inmates and facility)
  • Sanitation (ensures clean and safe environment, conducts routine inspections of assigned duty area and reports any sanitation issues)
  • Key Control (displays appropriate key control)
  • Care and Maintenance of Agency Property (properly cares for and maintains agency property, reports any maintenance needs in assigned duty areas)
  • Professional Conduct (law enforcement and community contact, off-duty behavior reflects positively on the organization)
  • Inmate Supervision (ensures inmates follow rules in inmate handbook while participating in transports, hospital visits, while being searched, etc. and using inmate disciplinary process when appropriate)
  • Technology Operations (OMS, Live Scan, Body Scanner, Commissary software, email, HR applications, etc.)
  • Control Room Operations (proper door and intercom operations)
  • Coherence to Policies and Procedures (conducts activities in accordance with policy and procedure)
  • Performs proper headcount of inmates in accordance with WVRJ policy and procedure
  • Performs meal service in accordance with WVRJ policy and procedure
  • Performs med pass in accordance with WVRJ policy and procedure
  • Performs commissary distributions in accordance with WVRJ policy and procedure
  • Makes security rounds of housing units in accordance with WVRJ policy and procedure
  • Current and up to date on housing unit status at any given time (inmate count, inmate location, lock down status, maintenance issues, status of housing unit activity such as medical, commissary, etc.)
