Build Something That Actually Matters
Most safety jobs are paperwork and policing. This is not that.
At Columbia Safety Services, safety is about protecting people, building trust, and creating a culture where every employee goes home in better condition than when they arrived. We are looking for someone to help build that culture from the ground up across multiple growing fire protection companies.
About Columbia Safety Services
Columbia Safety Services is the parent company of a growing group of fire and life safety businesses across the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West:
- Columbia Fire, LLC — Seattle, WA
- Valley Fire Control, LLC — Albany and Newport, OR + Spokane, WA
- FFF Protection — Greater Boise, with an office in Nampa, ID
Our companies install, inspect, service, and maintain fire sprinkler systems, fire alarms, suppression systems, extinguishers, and the life safety equipment that protects people and property. We are a multi-state regional company growing both organically and through acquisition.
Our core values guide how we operate: Customer First, Grit, Effective Communication, Own the Outcome, Take Pride in the Work, and Do the Right Thing.
Why This Role Exists
Historically, safety responsibilities have been spread across operations leaders already carrying full-time workloads. That no longer works.
We want a dedicated leader whose primary customer is our employees. The mission is simple: help make sure our people go home safely every day. Our long-term goal is zero injuries and zero preventable incidents.
If you believe injuries are just part of construction, this role is not for you.
Be Visible in the Field
You will spend most of your time:
- Walking active service, repair, tenant improvement, and construction jobsites
- Building relationships with field employees across every operating company
- Coaching crews, technicians, and foremen
- Leading by influence instead of fear
- Identifying risks before incidents occur
- Reinforcing good behavior rather than only correcting bad
- Helping employees solve problems safely
Expect roughly 4 to 16 hours per week in the office, with the remainder in the field, on jobsites, or supporting branches.
Build Safety Culture
- Lead and organize branch safety committees
- Create positive engagement around safety rather than compliance theater
- Develop lessons-learned communication that crews actually read
- Track and investigate near misses
- Build recognition and accountability systems
- Help employees see safety as part of professionalism, not punishment
Lead Safety Training
You will own and improve company-wide training, including OSHA topics, first aid and CPR awareness, lift and ladder safety, fall protection, heat stress, driver safety and distracted driving, PPE, hazard communication, confined space, job hazard assessments, portable fire extinguisher safety, cybersecurity awareness, and workplace behavior.
You will also:
- Select and manage our Learning Management System
- Coordinate onboarding safety training
- Own annual retraining programs
- Standardize training across all locations and companies
- Lead and support incident investigations and root cause analysis
- Support workers compensation follow-up and return-to-work coordination
- Manage documentation and corrective action planning
- Drive experience modification rate improvement initiatives
- Coordinate with Washington L&I, Oregon OSHA, Idaho requirements, and insurance carriers
Insurance management itself remains with executive leadership. This role heavily supports the operational side of claims and risk reduction.
Own Fleet Safety & Maintenance Oversight
- Fleet safety programs and driver safety initiatives
- Vehicle and trailer inspection programs
- Fleet maintenance coordination and platform administration
- Near-miss and vehicle incident tracking
Who You Are
- You like being around field employees more than sitting in meetings
- You naturally build trust with blue-collar teams
- You care deeply about people
- You hold high standards without acting arrogant
- You can coach without embarrassing people
- You want to build something long-term
- Aligned with our values: Customer First, Grit, Effective Communication, Own the Outcome, Take Pride in the Work, and Do the Right Thing.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- At least 3 years of construction-related safety experience
- Strong working knowledge of construction OSHA requirements
- Ability to walk active construction sites daily, climb ladders, navigate uneven terrain, lift ladders, tools, and equipment, and work outdoors year-round
- Willingness to travel regularly to branch locations across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho
- Residence in the Greater Seattle area, or willingness to relocate before your start date
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Fluent in spoken and written English
- Ability to pass a background check, pre-employment drug screen, and ongoing random testing requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Washington L&I workers compensation familiarity, and exposure to Oregon OSHA
- Fire protection, mechanical, electrical, or construction industry experience
- Multi-branch or multi-state operational support experience
- Safety committee leadership
- Incident investigation and claims or risk management support experience
- Experience working with bargaining unit crews
Certifications That Stand Out
Strong preference for candidates holding or pursuing:
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional)
- ASP (Associate Safety Professional)
- OSHA 500 or OSHA 30
- First Aid and CPR Instructor
- Lift trainer certifications
- Trailer towing safety training certifications
Additional backgrounds we value: firefighter or EMS, military leadership, insurance risk control, and construction field supervision.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role is not measured by how many people you discipline. It is measured by fewer injuries, fewer claims, better habits, better awareness, cleaner jobsites, better maintained vehicles, stronger field relationships, better documentation, higher training participation, and employees genuinely believing leadership cares about their safety.
We want safety to become part of the identity and pride of this organization, not just a requirement.
Compensation
- Base salary: $81,000 – $95,000 annually, depending on experience and credentials
- Annual bonus target of approximately $10,000
- 50% tied to personal initiatives, goals, and MBOs
- 50% tied to safety performance and claims reduction across the operating companies
This role is measured on safety culture improvement, reduction in incidents and claims, experience modification rate improvement, training engagement, field visibility, and long-term risk reduction. Bonus earnings depend on performance against agreed goals and are not guaranteed.
We are looking for someone who wants ownership, accountability, and influence — not someone looking to maintain compliance checklists.
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance through Regence BlueShield, Delta Dental of Washington, and VSP — available to employees scheduled 30 or more hours per week, effective the first of the month following or coinciding with your hire date
- The company pays approximately 90% of the employee premium on the HSA-qualified medical plan, plus a substantial share of dependent premiums
- Health Savings Account with a $600 annual company contribution
- 401(k) with Safe Harbor employer match up to 3.5%
- Paid time off starting at 10 days annually and increasing with length of service
- Company-paid basic life and AD&D insurance
- Employee Assistance Program, telehealth access, and optional pet insurance
- Company vehicle and fuel card
- Paid training, certifications, and continuing education
- Company laptop and technology package
- Paid training, certification support, and leadership development
- Multi-state career growth opportunities as the organization expands
- Full-time, home-based within the Greater Seattle area, hybrid by nature and field-first in practice
- Dedicated office workspace available in our Seattle office
- Approximately 4 to 16 hours weekly in-office, with the remainder in field operations and branch support
- Branch visits at least quarterly and ideally monthly across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho
- Occasional multi-state safety meetings and carrier or captive safety collaboration groups
- Work performed on active construction sites, in occupied buildings, mechanical rooms, and outdoors year-round, with required PPE
