Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Conducts field assessments and audits to ensure compliance with the Corporate EH&S Program Manual and regulations.
  • Generates reports documenting audit findings and follows up for corrective actions.
  • Provides recommendations to improve EH&S programs based on field observations.
  • Participates in Serious Injury & Fatality investigations as deemed appropriate.
  • Reviews Root Cause Analysis and Incident Reports to advise on causation and programmatic changes.
  • Reviews, schedules, and coordinates Industrial Hygiene sampling and results.
  • Assists in client pre-qualifications, pre-bid and pre-construction meetings.
  • Develops and updates corporate EH&S policies and procedures.
  • Provides field coverage to ensure safety across projects.

Job description

The Corporate Safety Manager is responsible for training, compliance and support from a safety, health, and environmental standpoint for all operating companies (Phillips Power, Phillips Heavy, Phillips Fleet, & Phillips Environmental). This position reports to the Corporate Safety Director and is based out of the corporate Knoxville, TN office. This position does not have any direct reports. This position will work closely with operating companies’ safety leads and field safety professionals, project teams, and senior leadership to provide training, guidance and assist in complying with the corporate EH&S Program Manual and applicable local, state, and federal regulations. The expected work schedule is Monday through Friday with availability on weekends when needed. This position requires extensive travel outside of the Knoxville, TN area and is a field based position. Occasionally, this position may be assigned to a long-term traveling project supporting an operating company.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conducts field assessments and audits to ensure compliance with our Corporate EH&S Program Manual, applicable local/state/federal regulations, and project/client specific requirements. Works with the project team to resolve any hazards identified.
  • Generates reports to document findings from audits and follows up to ensure corrective action is taken in a timely manner to mitigate any hazards identified.
  • Provides recommendations to Corporate EH&S Team for improvements to EH&S Program based on field observations
  • Participates in actual or potential Serious Injury & Fatality (SIF) and other incident investigations as deemed appropriate by corporate safety.
  • Reviews Root Cause Analysis and Incident Reports to offer input on causation, recommendations for improvement, and programmatic changes.
  • Reviews, schedules, and coordinates Industrial Hygiene sampling and results as required.
  • Assists in client pre-qualifications, pre-bid and pre-construction meetings.
  • Provides assistance and is a resource with the development of corporate EH&S policies and procedures.
  • Identifies areas of improvement within the EH&S Program Manual and provides suggestions for continues improvement.
  • Provides project safety coverage, when needed, to assist in filling any gaps for coverage including but not limited to disaster and emergency response.
  • Provides EH&S training and orientations infrequently.
  • Other duties as assigned by PIC Corporate Safety & Risk.
Experience/Education/Credentials
  • Previous experience of working with Mining, Heavy Civil and Power Utilities Construction such as large scale water projects, above ground mining, industrial and commercial site development, right-of-way clearing and access road construction, vegetation management, drilled shafts/foundations, etc. Some field experience will be required in multiple listed disciplines but not all.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management or similar field is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of safety experience in the construction industry.
  • Certifications from the BCSP (CHST, ASP, CSP) are highly preferred.

OR

  • Minimum of 12 years of safety experience in the construction industry.
  • CHST certification or higher BCSP credential.
Requirements
  • Working knowledge of applicable regulations and safe work practices as it relates to heavy civil and power delivery construction activities.
  • Ability for extensive travel. Will be home for the majority of the weekends.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with all levels within the organization.
  • Preferred candidates will have a wide knowledge of Construction and Safety knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Microsoft suite of applications to include Excel, Word. PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Familiarity in working with Artificial Intelligence Models.
Additional Considerations

This role may work 8-12 hours per day, 5-7 days per week in extreme hot and cold environments after acclimatization. Required to wear all required personal protective equipment on daily basis which may include but is not limited to Fire Rated Clothing, Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, Lace up Boots and Gloves. May be exposed to snakes, insects and similar with PPE and protective clothing/creams provided to minimize exposure. May be required to work on variable terrain in performance of duties. Required to operate motor vehicle.
