Job description

At RES, we’re looking for purpose-driven individuals who are passionate about restoration and sustainability, and who want their work to make a lasting environmental impact. Our team members go above and beyond, bringing initiative, integrity, and a strong work ethic to every project. Collaboration is key—we thrive on teamwork, open communication, and diverse perspectives. In a field that constantly changes, we value those who are resilient, adaptable, and resourceful in the face of challenges. If you're intellectually curious, eager to learn, and ready to help restore ecosystems and protect natural resources, you’ll find your place here.

RES is looking for a Controller to lead our accounting organization and help support the continued growth of our business.

As the Controller at RES, you will lead the company’s accounting function and be responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of our financial reporting. You will oversee a large, geographically distributed accounting team and provide leadership across financial close, technical accounting, project accounting, revenue recognition, internal controls, tax, audit, and accounting operations.

This is a highly visible leadership role within a fast-paced, purpose-driven organization. You will partner closely with Finance and business leaders to strengthen processes, improve financial visibility, and ensure our accounting infrastructure scales alongside RES's continued growth.

You’ll bring deep accounting expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and a continuous-improvement mindset to a company working to restore and protect land and water across the United States.

Why You’ll Love This Job

  • You’ll lead a significant accounting organization. You’ll set the direction for a team of 25+ accounting professionals and continue building a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing finance culture.
  • You’ll have enterprise-wide impact. RES has nearly 1,000 employees and projects across the country, giving you the opportunity to influence financial operations across a complex, growing organization.
  • You’ll help build for scale. You’ll strengthen accounting processes, controls, systems, and reporting practices to support continued organic growth, acquisitions, and increasing business complexity.
  • You’ll be a strategic partner to the business. Beyond ensuring accurate financial reporting, you’ll work with leaders across the organization to provide insight, solve complex business issues, and support sound decision-making.
A Day in the Life

As Controller, you will lead the company’s accounting organization, providing direction, coaching, and development to accounting leaders and team members while owning the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes. You will be responsible for ensuring timely and accurate financial statements and management reporting, maintaining the integrity of the general ledger across multiple legal entities and business units, and overseeing core accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and labor accounting, project accounting, and related transactional processes.

You will provide technical leadership on complex accounting matters, including revenue recognition under ASC 606 and percent-of-completion accounting for project-based work. You will establish and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and financial governance while ensuring compliance with US GAAP and monitoring emerging accounting standards that may impact the business. You will also lead the annual financial statement audit, serve as a primary contact for external auditors, coordinate tax compliance activities with internal and external partners, and review complex transactions, estimates, judgments, and reconciliations to ensure appropriate documentation and support.

Beyond the core accounting function, you will partner closely with FP&A and business leaders to improve financial reporting, forecasting, project performance visibility, and decision-making. You will collaborate with Project Management, Legal, Sales, Operations, and other teams to address financial and accounting matters across the business, while developing and monitoring key accounting metrics and measures of financial process effectiveness.

You will also play a key role in strengthening RES’s accounting infrastructure as the company grows. This includes driving improvements to systems, automation, reporting tools, and workflows, including continued optimization of NetSuite; supporting acquisitions, integrations, due diligence, and other corporate development initiatives; and building scalable accounting processes and organizational capabilities. As a trusted advisor to senior leadership, you will provide guidance on technical accounting matters, financial risks, controls, and opportunities for improvement while supporting strategic initiatives and special projects as the business continues to evolve.

We would like to talk to you if you have many of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and financial leadership experience
  • Significant experience leading accounting teams, including managers and geographically distributed employees
  • Demonstrated experience owning the financial close and financial reporting processes for a complex organization
  • Strong technical knowledge of US GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Experience with project-based accounting and revenue recognition
  • Experience working in project-based industries such as construction, engineering, environmental services, energy, infrastructure, or consulting
  • Experience working across multiple legal entities, business units, or operating regions
  • Demonstrated ability to build, improve, and scale accounting processes and controls
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex accounting and business issues
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate financial and accounting concepts effectively to both finance and non-finance stakeholders

What would make you stand out?

  • CPA designation
  • MBA or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Combination of public accounting experience—Big 4 or mid-tier—and progressive corporate accounting leadership
  • Deep knowledge of ASC 606 and percent-of-completion revenue recognition
  • Experience with NetSuite ERP
  • Experience working within a private equity-backed organization
  • Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, and post-acquisition integrations
  • Experience strengthening accounting functions during periods of significant organizational growth or transformation
  • Experience with complex project accounting, multi-entity structures, and geographically dispersed operations
