Job summary

Thurn Partners Ltd. is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for Core Engineering to design, build, and own production systems across compute, storage, and databases.

You will contribute to reliability, performance, and observability, and work with multiple engineering teams spanning networking, databases, security, and AI platforms. You will code daily in Python (primary language) with Go/Java/C++ as strong alternatives, own projects from design to production, and participate in on-call rotations

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years as a software engineer focusing on reliability or infrastructure.
• Strong programming skills; Python is preferred, with Go/Java/C++ also considered.
• Deep experience in distributed systems, storage or database reliability, compute platforms, or observability.
• Experience with configuration management and automation (Ansible or equivalent).
• Comfort with Linux at the system level.
• Builder mentality with systems thinking and writing code to fit the big picture.
• Finance experience is not required.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and ship software that makes compute/storage/database systems more reliable and faster.
• Write observability and automation tooling to reduce operational toil.
• Contribute to reliability/performance architecture for a platform used across the firm and market-making arm.
• Collaborate with engineers across Networking, Database, Kafka Platform, Security, and AI Platform.

Job description

The team that owns the foundational infrastructure of one of the world's leading hedge funds is hiring. Core Engineering builds the platform every business at the firm runs on, from compute and storage to databases and security, and the same platform runs the infrastructure for its market-making arm. Engineering decisions move straight into production, with little bureaucracy between a good idea and a live system. You'd join a small, senior team with real influence over architecture.

The Role

This is a software engineering position. You write code every day, and you build and own production systems instead of operating them. You own projects from design through production, with decisions made by the engineers closest to the problem. You'd join Core Engineering, the group that keeps the firm's foundational platform fast and reliable by building software, not by running it.

• Design, build and ship software that makes the firm's compute, storage and database systems more reliable and faster
• Write the observability and automation tooling that removes operational toil
• Contribute to architectural decisions on reliability and performance for a platform that serves every business across the firm and its market-making arm
• Work directly with engineers across eight sub-teams including Networking, Database, Kafka Platform, Security, and AI Platform.
• Support the systems you build through the on-call rotation

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
• 5+ years as a software engineer, with a focus on reliability or infrastructure
• Strong programming skills - Python is the primary language for this role and ideally your strongest, though strong engineers in Go, Java, or C++ are also considered
• Genuine depth in at least one of: distributed systems, storage or database reliability, compute platforms, or observability infrastructure
• Experience with configuration management and automation - Ansible or equivalent
• Comfort with Linux at the system level
• Builder mentality with strong systems thinking - someone who solves problems by writing code and thinks carefully about how the pieces fit together
• Finance experience is not required

Preferred Skills (not required)

• A track record of real, quantified impact, with measurable results you can point to (latency, cost, reliability or scale)
• Clear progression, with promotions or growing scope at a big tech company or a startup that scaled
• Observability tooling, such as Grafana or Prometheus
• Configuration management and automation, such as Ansible or equivalent
• Database reliability engineering, such as Postgres, MySQL or similar
• Open-source contributions to infrastructure or observability tooling
• Total compensation of $500,000 to $800,000, depending on experience and the impact you've delivered.
