Hickory Career & Arts Magnet High School in Hickory, NC seeks a Core Program Teacher Assistant to support students and teachers in the CORE classroom. Under limited supervision, you will assist with instruction, supervise students, and help implement prepared lessons.

Candidates should have an Associate’s degree in education or equivalent and be able to communicate effectively in standard English, manage daily activities, and report concerns to the CORE teacher.

JOB TITLE: CORE PROGRAM TEACHER ASSISTANT

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under limited supervision of the teacher and/or principal, provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students. Performs tasks to support the teacher in the teaching-learning process for students. Reports to the teacher and/or principal.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Supports the teacher within the CORE classroom setting with 1-on-1 help among students.
  • Communicate regularly with the teacher to understand what is needed from the teacher within the classroom.
  • Redirect behaviors, as appropriate, to help maintain student engagement and support the teacher.
  • Supervise CORE students while the teacher is working in small groups and in other alternative programs.
  • Present prepared lessons for social skills and soft skills.
  • Assist with other daily activities such as lunch, arrival, and dismissal.
  • Report any discipline concerns to the CORE teacher.
  • Assist with Day Treatment academics as needed

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as assigned by the teacher and/or principal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Associate’s degree in education or equivalent, preferred in a related field, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job functions.

STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to lift and move objects related to the job functions. Physical demand requirements are for light work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable characteristics of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to students.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read forms and materials associated with the job functions.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately in using instructional objects.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.
  • Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level to which employment assignment is made.
  • Some knowledge of the school organization and its community.
  • Some knowledge of expected behavior of children, that is, basic characteristics of ages and stages.
  • Skill necessary to operate audiovisual equipment and common office machines.
  • Skill to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans.
  • Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective.
  • Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor.
  • Ability to impart information to the child's level of comprehension.
  • Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward and punishment.
  • Ability to solve independently most minor problems.
  • Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision.
  • Ability to record and store data accurately.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information
  • Ability to work directly with students
