Job summary

Barnes-Jewish Hospital is seeking a full-time Cook to prepare hot foods for patients, staff and guests. The role requires leadership coverage in the absence of managers and adherence to recipes and sanitation standards.

You will handle high-volume, batch cooking in a fast-paced hospital environment, and accommodate special dietary requests while supporting team members and ensuring quality and cost control.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 2-5 years of experience in cooking or food service.
  • Lead cook responsibilities in department management in absence of managers/leads.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares food items according to standardized recipes, guidelines and sanitation standards.
  • Checks food quality and temperatures.
  • Maintains cost control and minimizes waste.
  • Accommodates special dietary requests.
  • Assists with other dietary team members and leads in absence of management.

The Department of Food and Nutrition at Barnes-Jewish Hospital consists of Patient, Retail and Catering Service areas on both the North and South Campus.¿ This includes patient meal and Clinical Nutrition Services, Queeny Tower Restaurant, three Cafeterias and three Coffee Bars.¿ It is the role of the department to serve the needs of patients, visitors and employees with excellent customer service.¿ Our qualified staff services the patients' nutritional needs during their hospital stay according to specified guidelines to improve their clinical status and assist in the healing process.¿ Opportunities are available for all skill levels from entry-level positions to licensed and/or certified management positions.

Preferred Qualifications
Role Purpose

Performs food production activities such as pre-preparation and preparation of hot foods for the patients, staff and guests. Responsible as the Lead Cook for the department management in Managers and/or Lead Employees absence.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares food items as assigned according to standardized recipes, food preparation guidelines and sanitation standards.
  • Consistently checks food for quality and correct temperature.
  • Maintains cost control and minimizes waste when preparing food.
  • Accommodates and has knowledge of special dietary requests.
  • Assists with the success of other dietary team members and assumes lead responsibility in management's absence.
