Location: Department of Public Safety, Waiawa Correctional Facility and Halawa Correctional Facility.

Shift Work

Applicants MUST be willing and able to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Duties Summary

Supervises and participates in cooking activities and is responsible for all cooking operations during an assigned work shift in a kitchen having several cooking stations serving a large number of meals. Responsibility includes supervising one or more Cook II positions and performing other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Legal Authorization to Work: State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government to be citizens, nationals, permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
  • General Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience demonstrating knowledge and skill to perform quantity cooking duties (e.g., cooking meats, fish, and poultry by roasting, baking, broiling, frying). Experience must include daily preparation of meals in a large institution such as a restaurant, hospital, school, or correctional facility.
  • At least one year of experience comparable to Cook II in state service: Cook II is responsible for independently cooking various entrees, may supervise a cooking station or a small kitchen, and may supervise kitchen and cook helpers.
  • Non‑qualifying Experience: Experience limited only to serving food, cleaning kitchen areas, washing dishes, or limited to one phase of cooking such as fry‑cooking or baking does not qualify.
  • Supervisory Aptitude: Applicants must possess supervisory aptitude demonstrated by completing supervisory assignments, acting as a team leader, undergoing supervision training, and receiving favorable appraisals.
  • Other Requirements: Conditioned employees will be subject to drug screening and an intensive background check.
  • Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply.
Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement
  • Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution.
  • Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.
  • Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in #2 above.
  • Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
