Job summary

The University of Kansas Health System in Kansas City, KS is hiring a Dining Services Cook I to prepare foods according to recipes for patients, cafeteria, catering and childcare, while contributing to waste reduction and financial stewardship. You will follow daily production worksheets, ensure food safety, rotate inventories, and maintain sanitation standards in a fast-paced hospital setting.

The ideal candidate has a High School diploma or GED and 1+ year of cooking experience in large-volume

Qualifications

  • High School graduates or GED required.
  • 1+ year of cook or food service experience in restaurant, institutional, or large-volume settings.
  • Basic reading and math skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares menu items using daily production worksheets and recipes.
  • Demonstrates competence in critical thinking, interpersonal relations, and technical skills.
  • Performs duties in Food Production and/or the Cafeteria.
  • Organizes daily production in the unit.
  • Prepares food for inventory and service with proper portioning, labeling, and dating.
  • Ensures proper storage and rotation of inventories per HACCP standards.
  • Maintains a safe, sanitary food preparation and service environment.
  • Tests and evaluates new recipes.
  • Adjusts work hours to meet cafeteria or catering needs.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

Job description

The Dining Services Cook I prepares foods according to recipe specifications while preventing waste contributing to financial stewardship. The Cook contributes to the effective operations of the department through preparation of food for the patients, cafeteria, catering and childcare. Food preparation may include retail, production, or catering performing such tasks as portioning and serving food, transporting food to service areas, catering, busing dishes, storing and issuing of supplies, and cashiering. Demonstrates the ability to ensure food, equipment, and work surface sanitation standards are maintained. Follows food storage standards according to regulatory agencies and best practice. Contributes to the positive customer service by "owning" customer interactions and providing safe and high quality foods.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Prepares menu items, using daily production worksheets and standardized recipes.
  • Demonstrates competence in the areas of critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and technical skills.
  • Performs duties in Food Production and/or the Cafeteria.
  • Organizes daily production in unit.
  • Prepares food for inventory and/or service including portioning, wrapping, labeling, dating food items prepared for patients, cafeteria, and/or catering according to unit standards.
  • Ensures proper storage and rotation of inventories in refrigerators and freezers following HACCP and department standards.
  • Maintains a safe and sanitary food preparation/service environment per unit standards.
  • Tests and evaluates new recipes.
  • Adjusts work hours to early or late to prepare needed Cafeteria or Catering products.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • 1 or more years of experience as a cook in restaurant, institutional or large volume feeding.
