Job summary

Pikes Peak Post Acute in Bakersfield, CA, is seeking a cook to manage the kitchen in the absence of the Dietary Supervisor. The role reports to the Dietary Supervisor and focuses on safe, sanitary operation and meal preparation for residents.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of hospital or long‑term‑care cooking experience. ServSafe certification is preferred, with opportunities for professional growth in a team‑oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain kitchen and cooking area in a safe, orderly, clean, and sanitary manner.
  • Prepare tasteful meals and cook a variety of foods in large quantities.
  • Follow prepared menus and portion control guides; prepare special diets accurately.
  • Record food temperatures for the meals; prepare pureed foods; work cooperatively with personnel in all departments.
  • Maintain sanitizer solutions; assist with serving meals; clean cooking area and serving carts.
  • Ensure food presentation is appealing to residents; supervise staff when necessary.

Pay Range: $17.00 – $20.00 per hour

General Purpose

It is the responsibility of the cook to manage and operate the kitchen in the absence of the Dietary Supervisor. The cook reports to the Dietary Supervisor.

Essential Duties
  • Maintain kitchen and cooking area in a safe, orderly, clean, and sanitary manner.
  • Prepare tasteful meals and cook a variety of foods in large quantities.
  • Follow prepared menus and portion control guides; prepare special diets accurately.
  • Record food temperatures for the meals; prepare pureed foods; work cooperatively with personnel in all departments.
  • Maintain sanitizer solutions in buckets; assist with serving meals; clean cooking area and serving carts.
  • Report resident care concerns and potential issues to Administrator and/or Director of Nurses; participate in orientation and ongoing training of dietary staff.
  • Ensure food presentation is appealing to residents; supervise staff when necessary.
  • Ensure all cleaning schedules are followed; supervise when the Dietary Supervisor is absent.
Qualification

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Must have at least one year of experience as a cook in a hospital or long‑term‑care facility.

Language Skills: Ability to read technical procedures and recipes; effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.

Mathematical Skills: Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Solve practical problems; interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must obtain and maintain ServSafe Certificate. Knowledge and experience with PCC preferred. Must remain in good standing with the Department of Public Health.

Physical Demands

Standing and/or walking very frequently; sitting occasionally; reaching with hands and arms frequently; pushing/pulling frequently; talking/hearing frequently; tasting/smelling frequently; lifting up to 50 pounds frequently; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling occasionally. Requires good visual and hearing perception.
