Job summary

Abbott, at the Columbus Plant, is hiring an Electrical Controls Technician for a 12-hour rotating night shift. The role focuses on maintaining electrical and mechanical systems, troubleshooting high-speed equipment, and performing preventative maintenance across production lines and utility systems.

The ideal candidate has 2+ years of electrical/industrial experience, an electrical degree or equivalent, and proficiency with PLCs (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell) and wiring schematics.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of electrician, controls technician, or industrial experience
  • Electrical technical degree, or High School Diploma/GED and 2+ years of equivalent experience in an Instrumentation or related role
  • Able to access and interpret PLC logic via a laptop or desktop and understand wiring schematics
  • Understanding of wiring schematics to maintain a PLC
  • Experience with Allen Bradley, Rockwell, RSLogix including VFDs and PLCs

Responsibilities

  • Perform repairs and troubleshoot high-speed equipment and plant utility systems; adjust machines for proper operation
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Troubleshoot and repair/replace PLCs and drives
  • Wire and replace components such as seals, belts, bearings, cables, and fuses
  • Use electrical tools like multimeter and megger
  • Maintain tools and equipment and follow GMP and safety procedures

OVERVIEW OF ROLE

The goal for the Electrical Controls Technician within the Maintenance Department is to maintain plant electrical/mechanical systems and equipment in a safe and reliable manner. This work must comply with all applicable corporate, state and federal regulation/policies. The Maintenance Department’s function is to provide outstanding customer service and support to the manufacturing teams through preventative/predictive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and upgrading of plant processing, packaging, and the filling line equipment.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Perform repairs and troubleshoot high speed equipment and plant utility systems; make machine adjustments to case packers, palletizers, sleevers, labelers, and other equipment for proper operation

  • Perform Preventative Maintenance on equipment to ensure proper operation

  • Troubleshoot and repair/replace variable frequency drives (VFDs), vision systems and barcode scanners, video-jet ink printers, computer control systems

  • Install various components including: seals, bushings, couplings, bearings, O-rings, gaskets, adhesives, belts, chains, rollers, sprockets, gears and sheaves, cylinders, etc.

  • Wire and repair/replace electric motors; repair basic wiring, install/replace correct size fuses, troubleshoot motor overload protection and contactors

  • Use electrical tools such as Multi-meter and Megger

  • Responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting problems with AC drive systems and PLCs

  • Ability to make emergency repairs with welding and fabricating brackets

  • Use guidelines within National Electric Code (NEC); read electrical schematics and wire directly from wiring diagrams

  • Responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting problems with AC drive systems and PLCs.

  • Access and interpret PLC logic via a laptop computer or desktop station and properly maintain a PLC

  • Accountable for maintaining various hand tools and equipment; drills, wrenches, micrometers, calipers, torches, welders, lathe, mill, multimeter, grinders, bandsaw, etc.

  • Follow all plant and department procedures, GMP’s and plant safety rules. Keep all work areas clean by following 5S protocol.

  • Follow all maintenance safety procedures; LOTO

SHIFT

12-hour rotating night shift, 6p-6:30a

Example of rotating schedule:

  • Week 1: Sun, Wed, Thurs
  • Week 2: Mon, Tues, Fri, Sat

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years of electrician, controls technician, or industrial experience

  • Electrical technical degree, or High School Diploma/GED and 2+ years of equivalent experience in an Instrumentation or related role

  • Able to access and interpret PLC logic via a laptop computer or desktop station and understanding of wiring schematics

  • Understanding of the wiring schematics to properly maintain a PLC

  • Experience with Allen Bradley, Rockwell, RSLogix including but not limited to VFD’s and PLC’s

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s degree or higher in an electrical technical field

  • Experience with Instrumentation – performing calibrations and critical PM’s on equipment components to ensure operation within proper tolerances

  • Experience with Instruments. Examples: Pressure, flow, temperature, humidity, level, weight or scale experience; using 4-20 mA loop control, 0-10V control, calibration procedures, setup and verification with other equipment, etc.

  • Able to repair and rebuild: centrifugal/positive displacement pumps, capper chucks and filler valves, etc.

  • Able to work with Plant engineering team to develop sustainable more robust systems into our asset care programs

The base pay for this position is

$24.65 – $49.25/hour
