Job summary

Sonoco is seeking an Industrial Controls Technician in Dayton, NJ. The role focuses on electrical and PLC maintenance, troubleshooting and improving plant equipment to minimize downtime.

You will manage documentation, set up systems, and support electronic and PLC projects, including training teammates and identifying obsolete systems for replacement. The job requires hands-on maintenance, PM duties, and potential weekend or night coverage as needed, with a base wage of $38.39–$47.35 per hour

Qualifications

• 3-5 years in an industrial setting with a focus on electrical work and PLCs.
• Strong electronic and PLC skills with proficiency in AB applications.
• Familiarity with Allen Bradley PLCs and Servo drives; Beckhoff PLC knowledge a plus.
• Proficient with applicable software and printed logic; capable of writing and updating operating programs.

Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain accurate documentation of PLC programs, drives, and electronic files.
• Maintenance, system setup and selection of supporting hardware.
• Evaluate electronic systems and software applications for improvements.
• Provide PLC and electronic training within the department.
• Assist in process improvements, new installations, and related projects.

Reporting directly to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Industrial Controls Technician is responsible for achieving a high level of reliability for plant equipment through performing tasks required to maintain equipment and minimize downtime. This individual will use their training and knowledge to perform equipment/process/system maintenance, troubleshoot equipment, make repairs, and identify and implement opportunities for improvement.

What you’ll be doing:

• Must be able to pass electrical skills and safety testing to become a qualified Category 2 worker. Must be capable of performing electrical work on systems up to 480 Volts.
• As the resident electronic and PLC resource, you will be responsible for:
• Establishing and maintaining accurate, current and secure documentation of printed logic, PLC programs, drive parameters, electronic files and supporting software.
• Maintenance, system set-up and selection of supporting hardware.
• Application evaluation of electronic systems and software.
• Facilitate electronic and PLC training within the department.
• Seek out and identify obsolete, unsupported or otherwise deficient systems. Research and identify solutions then report, prepare scope of work and cost estimates to resolve.
• Actively participate in process improvement, new installation and make ready related to electronic, PLC or mechanical projects.
• Will function as a maintenance technician as needed, responsible for PM duties, project work and scheduled or breakdown maintenance, when situation dictates.
• Expected to be a resource on weekends or nights as needed.
• Work with the site MRO Coordinator concerning inventory management of related electronic spares.

We’d love to hear from you if:

• You will need 3-5 years’ experience within an industrial setting where your focus was heavily with electrical and PLCs
• You must have strong electronic and PLC skills, proficient knowledge of AB applications.
• Familiarity with Allen Bradley PLCs and Servo drives, Beckhoff PLC knowledge a plus.
• Proficient understanding of applicable software, program language and printed logic
• Programming, capable of writing, re‑writing and creating new operating programs.
• Understanding of current applications and systems, mechanical and electrical
• Proficient computer skills, word processing and software understanding
