Actalent is seeking a Controls Technician to install, commission, maintain, and repair advanced packaging equipment on customer sites. You will troubleshoot PLC-based control systems (Allen Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Codesys, SCL) and update software as needed, while maintaining detailed service records.

You will train customers and coordinate with internal teams, traveling domestically and internationally as required to ensure optimal machine performance and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of OEM field service experience with PLC and motion control systems.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, 75–80% of the time.

Job Description

This Controls Technician position focuses on the installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of advanced packaging equipment, with an emphasis on aseptic thermoform machines and their control systems. You will play a key role in ensuring optimal machine performance, providing high-quality technical support, and maintaining strong customer relationships through on-site service and expertise in PLC-based control platforms.

Responsibilities
  • Install, commission, maintain, and repair new and existing packaging equipment, with a primary focus on aseptic thermoform machines at customer sites.
  • Perform detailed field audits of installed equipment to assess performance, reliability, and compliance with specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and support PLC-based control systems, including Allen Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Codesys, and SCL platforms.
  • Analyze and resolve on-site electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic system issues to restore and optimize machine performance.
  • Modify and update machine control software and firmware as required to support upgrades, improvements, and customer-specific configurations.
  • Maintain accurate machine configuration records, service documentation, and technical reports for all work performed.
  • Provide on-site customer support to ensure efficient issue resolution, high service quality, and strong customer satisfaction.
  • Train customers, operators, and technical teams on equipment operation, maintenance procedures, safety practices, and control system functionality.
  • Serve as the site lead when assigned, coordinating field technicians and collaborating closely with engineering, assembly, and customer teams.
  • Support system commissioning and testing activities, including participation in Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
  • Assist internal teams such as Customer Service, Sales, and Assembly by providing technical support and guidance on equipment and controls.
  • Collaborate with Parts and Modernization teams by contributing technical input for quoting control system and electrical upgrades.
  • Provide feedback to internal stakeholders on equipment performance, potential enhancements, and evolving customer needs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and customer site protocols at all times.
  • Identify and report quality concerns or customer issues through appropriate channels to support continuous improvement.
  • Document and submit detailed service reports and expense reports accurately and in a timely manner.
Essential Skills
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Hands-on experience with PLC-based control systems, including Allen Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Codesys, and SCL.
  • Proficiency in controls programming, controls engineering, and working with motion control software and hardware.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the OEM industry involved in designing, editing, installing, and troubleshooting PLC and motion control software and hardware.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or at least 2 years of vocational training in Electromechanical Systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and control diagrams to support installation and troubleshooting.
  • Strong documentation skills for maintaining accurate machine configurations, service records, and technical reports.
  • Effective communication skills to train customers, operators, and technical teams and to collaborate with internal departments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and sometimes internationally for extended periods, approximately 7580% of the time.
  • Capability to work independently on customer sites while also coordinating with cross-functional teams.
  • Commitment to following safety standards, PPE requirements, and customer site protocols.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working with aseptic thermoform packaging equipment or similar packaging machinery.
  • Background in field service or commissioning roles supporting complex industrial or packaging equipment.
  • Familiarity with SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) and FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) procedures.
  • Experience leading or coordinating field technicians and acting as a site lead on customer projects.
  • Ability to provide technical input for modernization and upgrade projects related to control systems and electrical components.
  • Strong customer service orientation with a focus on building long-term client relationships.
  • Flexibility to adapt to varying customer environments, schedules, and project requirements.
Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based, working on customer sites where advanced packaging and aseptic thermoform equipment is installed. You will travel approximately 7580% of the time, both domestically and occasionally internationally, often for extended periods away from home. The work environment includes production floors and industrial facilities where you will interact closely with customer operations, maintenance, and engineering teams. You will work hands-on with PLC-based control systems such as Allen Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Codesys, and SCL, as well as electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems. The position requires adherence to all site-specific safety protocols and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by each facility.

This is a Permanent position based out of Oldsmar, FL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $83200.00 - $95680.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
