Job summary

Giga Energy is seeking a field-oriented controls commissioning lead for data center projects. You will own controls commissioning at each site, from L2 through L5 and IST, and be the main contact for the third-party CxA.

You’ll inspect PLCs, HMIs, SCADA and BMS, run loop checks, verify alarms, and perform field edits. The role requires heavy travel (≈80%) and on-site presence with occasional WFH Fridays where possible.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years in controls or automation in industrial or commercial settings.
  • Proficient in the Rockwell PLC/HMI environment (Studio 5000, FactoryTalk).
  • Fluency in understanding site level drawings, PID diagrams, Control and power schematics, Equipment cutsheets and network drawings.
  • Familiarity with Ignition vision and perspective.
  • Experience with SCADA, BMS or EPMS: monitoring, alarm configuration, troubleshooting and HMI operation.
  • Familiar with mechanical and electrical systems: cooling (chillers, CRAHs, AHUs), power distribution (switchgear, UPS, generators, VFDs, ATSs), pumps, sensors and field I/O.
  • Familiar with OT network setup and protocols like Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, RS485 and EtherNet/IP.
  • Can diagnose hardware and software faults and make changes in the field to get the systems up and running immediately.
  • CAD skills for redlines and as-builts.
  • 4-year engineering degree, Electrical or Mechanical preferred. Any degree is OK.
  • Willing to travel around 80%.

Responsibilities

  • Commissioning lead. Own controls commissioning at each site, L2 through L5 and IST. Be the main contact for the third-party CxA.
  • Controls startup. Check out PLCs, HMIs, SCADA and BMS. Run loop checks and verify alarms and interlocks.
  • Site SME. Be the site's go-to person for controls: PLC, SCADA, BMS, EPMS and instrumentation.
  • Troubleshooting. Lead troubleshooting of critical systems in the field. Make small PLC and HMI edits on site, and escape bigger changes to design team.
  • Contractors. Coordinate electrical, mechanical and controls contractors on site.
  • Field networking. Bring up and check device comms for VFDs and field devices over Modbus TCP/RTU, RS485 and EtherNet/IP, working with the Network Engineer.
  • Controls device upkeep. Handle firmware updates and patching on controllers and HMI/SCADA hosts, including Linux machines.
  • As-builts. Redline drawings in the field and update as-builts in CAD.
  • Cx documentation. Own checklists, test scripts, punch lists and turnover packages.
  • After go-live. Be the escalation point for controls events and alarms, join the on-call rotation, and lead root cause analysis after events.
  • Standards. Turn lessons learned into commissioning standards so the next site goes smoother.

Job description

What you’ll do

We're building data center sites and need someone who owns controls commissioning in the field. You'll be on site most of the time, getting chiller plants, CDUs,FWUs power and BMS systems running, and making sure what was designed is what actually works.

You'll fix what you can on the spot, escape what you can't, and stay with the site after go-live as the controls go-to person. We move fast, so you need to be comfortable making calls in the field.

Where you’ll work

This role is ideally based in our San Francisco, Long Beach, or Houston offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.

That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.

Responsibilities

  • As-builts. Redline drawings in the field and update as-builts in CAD.

  • Cx documentation. Own checklists, test scripts, punch lists and turnover packages.
