Job summary

Amentum Advanced Solutions in Tennessee is seeking a Controls & Instrumentation Engineer Intern for 2027 to support projects from small studies to turnkey systems. You will work with a team of engineers and business professionals to meet scope, budget, and schedule. Housing arrangements may be discussed by the team.

Under supervision, you will develop wiring diagrams, implement control software, and contribute to hardware fabrication while learning high-level languages and engineering tools.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited engineering program required.
  • 0-5 years of experience in control or data acquisition system design/implementation.
  • Willingness to learn software in C/C++/C# and LabVIEW/MATLAB/SIMULINK.
  • Background in PLCs, sensors, actuators, PID control and communication networks.

Responsibilities

  • Develop hardware assembly and wiring diagrams for control and data acquisition systems.
  • Implement control system software for temperature, pressure, humidity, flow, and motion control.
  • Develop PLC ladder logic and HMI programming.
  • Interface to facility equipment via hardwired interfaces and industrial networks.
  • Apply closed-loop control methods to CV systems.
  • Support hardware assembly and fabrication.

Amentum Advanced Solutions (AS) is a performance unit of Amentum Engineering & Technology Line of Business. Advanced Solutions specializes in the development, design, construction, and operation of unique and complex research & development, scientific, and test facilities, including wind tunnels (aerospace, DoD, automotive, motorsports, etc.), rocket test stands, climatic chambers, jet engine test cells, acoustic chambers, altitude test facilities, captive trajectory systems, and nuclear facilities. AS projects span the automotive, motorsports, defense, nuclear, and aerospace markets. AS is looking for a Controls & Instrumentation Engineer Intern for 2027 to support projects ranging from small studies to multi-million dollar turn-key supply. A successful candidate must be team-oriented, organized, able to communicate to all levels of the organization, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Under the supervision of senior engineering staff, responsibilities include:
  • Developing hardware assembly and wiring diagrams for control and data acquisition systems.
  • Implementing control system software designs that include control of temperature, pressure, humidity, flow, force, motion of mechanisms, system safety, human safety, and other advanced process and electromechanical systems.
  • Developing control system software in PLC ladder logic, function block, HMI programming, etc.
  • Implementing interfaces to facility equipment using hardwired interfaces and industrial networks.
  • Applying closed loop controls methods, both classical and modern, to control continuously variable systems.
  • Supporting hardware assembly and fabrication.

Qualifications
  • A student in a Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechatronics, or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program.
  • 0-5 years of experience in control or data acquisition system design, implementation, or commissioning.
  • A desire to learn software development in high-level programming languages such as C/C++/C# and in engineering application software tools such as LabVIEW, MATLAB and SIMULINK.
  • An interest and background in electronics, instrumentation, control and data acquisition systems, PLCs, variable frequency drive systems, motion control systems, sensors and transmitters, actuators, PID control, and communication networks.
  • A solid math background to select and develop data uncertainty calculations, digital filter algorithms, control transfer function realizations, and process simulation.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team environment to design, develop, and deliver control and data acquisition systems.

  • Proximity to extreme temperature variations and rotating equipment (<10%)

  • Proximity to electrical circuits up to 480VAC (5%-15%)
  • Special clothing/equipment may include appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including eye protection, hearing protection, arc flash protection, etc. (5%-15%)

  • Office, lab environment, or indoors on a construction site (>80%)
Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks
  • General office equipment (>80%)
  • Control devices such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), servo drives, industrial instrumentation, data acquisition measurement systems, etc. (>50%)
  • Multimeters (5%-15%)
  • Signal generators and Oscilloscopes (5%-15%)
  • Handheld electrical tools such as strippers, cutters, crimpers, terminators, etc. (5%-15%)
Criticality of Attendance
  • Regular attendance in office is mandatory
  • Overtime to meet project schedules and milestones (<5%)
  • Hours Monday thru Thursday - 7:30am to 5:15pm and Friday - 7:30am to 11:30am
Compensation Details:

$36,000 - $50,639.94
