Job summary

LAPORTE is seeking an Intermediate Controls Engineer to join our growing team in a role focused on controls and automation across multiple industries. You will program PLCs, HMIs and SCADA, design network layouts, and collaborate with design teams to meet project specifications while delivering commissioning support.

Ideal candidates have 2+ years in industrial controls or system integration, a bachelor’s degree in a related field, and experience with Allen-Bradley and HMI/SCADA tools.

• Minimum 2 years in industrial controls or system integration roles.

Responsibilities

• Programming PLC, HMI and SCADA systems for continuous, discrete and batch processes.
• Design and specify industrial networks (Ethernet, Modbus, IO-Link).
• Collaborate with Process/Electrical Design to define control system specs.
• Read and interpret P&IDs and process design docs to support control specs.
• Generate and maintain I/O lists, process narratives, FDS, commissioning forms.
• Provide commissioning and startup services.
• Troubleshoot electrical and control equipment and configure panels.

Key Responsibilities

As a Controls Engineer, you will support controls and automation projects across a variety of industries.

• Programming of PLC, HMI and SCADA systems for continuous, discrete and batch processes.
• Industrial network specification and design (Ethernet, Modbus, IO-Link, etc.).
• Collaboration with other disciplines (Process Design, Electrical Design) to identify control system specifications.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and other process design documentation to assist in control system specifications.
• Generate and maintain necessary documentation, including I/O Lists, Process Narratives, Functional Design Specifications, Commissioning Forms, etc., dependent upon customer requirements.
• Provide commissioning and startup services.
• Electrical troubleshooting and ability to commission and configure a wide range of control equipment (VFDs, transmitters, etc.).
• Assist in control panel design and equipment specification, ensuring compliance with applicable codes (NEC, UL508A) and standards.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Science, or Chemical Engineering required.

Experience

• Minimum of 2 years in an industrial controls (end-user or OEM), or system integration/consulting role as a controls engineer.

Technical Expertise

• Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC’s, HMI’s and programming software required

Desired Technical Expertise

• Experience in any of the following HMI/SCADA software is desirable: Inductive Automaton Ignition, AVEVA Wonderware, GE iFix
• Experience with Siemens SIMATIC controllers and STEP 7 programming software
• Experience in the use and configuration of historians (FactoryTalk Historian, OSISoft PI)
• Experience with OPC Servers (Kepware, Matrikon), Databases (SQL)
• Proficiency in managing tasks within integration projects, including client coordination, system design, and deliverable preparation.
• Proficiency in control panel design, network design, and component selection

Additional Skills

• Strong leadership and organizational abilities with a focus on relationship management.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
