Department:Contract Manufacturing Services (CMS) Engineering - Metals
Reports to:Senior Automations Engineer

Position Summary

Provide controls engineering support to the CMS new product development, production, operations, and maintenance teams. Works in engineering, improving efficiency, productivity, and quality. Highly focused on improving control processes with automation design, development, and implementation. Interfaces with the corporate technology departments and other business units.

Job Responsibilities
  • Launch of automated systems that deliver products meeting customer expectations and budget.
  • Continuous improvement project generation, planning, implementation, and validation utilizing automation.
  • Assist operations, production, and maintenance on large/critical jobs to determine customer requirements and help launch production programs.
  • Works with internal and external customers in determining feasibility of new/difficult applications and developing systems for automated equipment.
  • Specifies, justifies, and acquires new equipment, reworks/improves existing equipment.
  • Programs PLCs, HMIs, and IO maps to build equipment for CMS use.
  • Organizes automated equipment demonstrations and the completion of routine debugging and system runoffs.
  • Provides day-to-day technical support to help production maintain systems on the shop floor; assists in setting up complex/difficult jobs.
  • Regularly analyzes services provided for internal and external customers to develop new ways to better satisfy customer needs (new/different equipment, alternative work methods, improved quality/service, partial and/or full automation, etc.).
  • Develop estimated costs for proposed projects.
  • Writes technical operation and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Identifies, recommends, designs, develops, and implements automation solutions as a technical expert for the organization.
  • Create a business case to justify new manufacturing automation processes and implement.
  • Designs and builds or purchases automation solutions for new or existing programs and implements.
  • Visits customers at their facilities as needed.
  • Completes other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Job Requirements
  • Four-year engineering degree (ME or EE preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of industrial experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience identifying and implementing automation in manufacturing
  • Experienced with PLCs, HMIs, vision systems, and troubleshooting controls / electrical systems.
  • Experience designing with AutoCAD Electrical, PC-based software for word processing, spreadsheets, project management, design, and manufacturing.
  • Project management, team building, and leadership skills with multi-disciplinary teams from a matrix-type organization.
  • Ability to keep up with the latest automation technologies.
  • Able to work independently, with very good verbal and written communication skills.
  • 10% travel.
Physical Requirements
  • Handling and near vision- over 4 hours a day.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs., talking, hearing, and working alone 3-5 hours a day.
  • Walking and reading 2-3 hours a day.
  • Standing, sitting, stooping, and crouching up to 4 hours a day.
