Job summary

Actalent is seeking a highly experienced Controls Engineer to design, develop, install, and maintain control systems across multiple applications including industrial controls, cybersecurity, building automation, and energy management. You will lead programming, configuration, and testing of PLCs, RTUs, and HMI systems, working with protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, and SEL Fast Messaging.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in electrical/automation engineering or related field.
  • 7+ years for Bachelor's or 5+ years for Master’s in relevant industry.
  • Hands-on experience in electric utilities sector and solution architecture.
  • Proficiency with real-time grid management systems (ADMS/DERMS/SCADA/EMS).
  • Experience with major vendor software suites (Aspen, Siemens, ABB, GE, Schneider Electric, OSIsoft, Honeywell, Oracle Utilities, Eaton, PcVue, Inductive Ignition).

Responsibilities

  • Design and originate docs for small projects and support large programs.
  • Lead programming and configuration for complex automation and SCADA applications.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs/RTUs/HMI with industry protocols.
  • Prepare testing, commissioning procedures, and test reports.
  • Travel as needed to support field deployments and site surveys.

Job Title: Controls Engineer 4
Job Description

As a Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, installation, and maintenance of equipment used to monitor and control systems, machinery, and processes. Your expertise will be applied across various applications such as industrial controls, cybersecurity, building automation, water and wastewater management, power controls and protection, energy management, and transportation systems. You will leverage your technical skills in advanced process control, instrumentation, distributed control systems, PLCs, and SCADA systems to design and implement solutions for complex customer needs.

Responsibilities
  • Design and originate documents for small projects and support large programs.
  • Conduct requirements analysis, subsystem designs, and prepare specifications.
  • Perform QA/QC and technical reviews of designs.
  • Lead programming and configuration efforts for complex automation and SCADA applications.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs, RTUs, and HMI systems with protocols like DNP3, Modbus, SEL Fast Messaging, or Mirrored Bits.
  • Author testing and commissioning procedures and prepare test reports.
  • Commission deployed systems and develop test fixtures and simulation devices.
  • Perform factory and field testing.
  • Troubleshoot service calls and perform hardware/software upgrades on existing systems.
  • Conduct surveys, inspections, and prepare cost estimates for projects.
  • Assist expereinced engineers with bids and proposals.
  • Assign and coordinate tasks with entry-level engineers and technical staff.
Essential Skills
  • Proficiency in PLC programming, SCADA, switchgear, SEL, RTAC, generator controls, and substations.
  • Bachelor's degree with 7+ years or Master's degree with 5+ years in electrical, automation, or other engineering fields.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in the electric utilities sector.
  • Minimum of 5 years specializing in solution architecture.
  • Proficiency in real-time grid management with systems like ADMS, DERMS, SCADA, and EMS.
  • Experience with vendor software systems such as Aspen, Siemens, ABB, General Electric, Schneider Electric, OSIsoft, Honeywell, Oracle Utilities, Eaton, PcVue, Inductive Ignition, or similar products.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in reading electrical and control schematics and plans.
  • Experience in control system startup, configuration, and calibration.
  • Proficiency in testing and troubleshooting control systems.
  • Experience using basic electrical and machinist hand tools, as well as industry-specific tools.
Work Environment

This position is based in Baltimore, MD, with support required in Frederick and Ft Meade, necessitating travel as needed. You will be part of the PCS (power control systems) group within a large and reputable company. The standard work shift is Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

The pay range for this position is $125120.00 - $187680.00/yr.
