The Controls Engineer designs, develops, and supports automated manufacturing equipment within a production environment. This role requires hands‑on expertise in electrical design, controls systems, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable and efficient operation of automation systems.

Key responsibilities include creating and maintaining detailed electrical schematics, ensuring all documentation is accurate and up to date throughout the equipment lifecycle. The Controls Engineer provides direct shop‑floor support to the assembly team, assisting with system integration, commissioning, and resolving technical issues that arise during build and production phases. This position also involves research and development activities, including the design and implementation of prototype and test equipment to support new product development and process improvements. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong problem‑solving abilities and takes initiative in identifying and implementing improvements to existing systems.

A strong background in PLC programming and PLC networking is required. The Controls Engineer will develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs, as well as configure and maintain industrial communication networks to ensure seamless integration between equipment, sensors, and control systems. The Controls Engineer must thrive in a collaborative team environment while also being self‑driven and capable of working independently. A solid background in automated manufacturing systems is essential, along with working knowledge of electrical codes and machine safety requirements. Compliance with OSHA regulations and industry safety standards is a critical component of this role. Successful candidates will combine technical expertise with strong communication skills, enabling effective coordination across engineering, production, and maintenance teams to deliver safe, reliable, and high‑performing automation solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure all equipment and controls systems meet safety standards, electrical codes, and company requirements
  • Design, build, and integrate automated manufacturing equipment, including electrical panels and control systems
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs to support new and existing equipment
  • Configure and maintain industrial communication networks to ensure reliable system integration
  • Create and maintain accurate electrical schematics, documentation, and bills of material throughout the equipment lifecycle
  • Prepare, assemble, and test new equipment prior to release to production
  • Provide hands‑on shop floor support during equipment build, debug, commissioning, and start‑up
  • Troubleshoot and resolve controls and electrical issues to minimize downtime and maintain production efficiency
  • Analyze equipment performance and implement improvements to increase reliability, efficiency, and output
  • Support cross‑functional teams with technical expertise for production, maintenance, and engineering activities
  • Lead or support installation, validation, and handoff of new or modified equipment to production
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities in automation systems and processes
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field required
  • Experience with PLC programming and industrial control systems required
  • Working knowledge of PLC languages such as Ladder, STL, or Diagram
  • Experience with industrial communication networks and system integration
  • Familiarity with electrical design and drafting tools such as AutoCAD, UG, or SolidWorks
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills
  • Knowledge of automated manufacturing systems
  • Knowledge of machine safety standards and OSHA requirements
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a high‑pressure environment
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and flexible schedule
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability and willingness to learn new software and computer programming functions as required
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge
  • Good Math Skills (algebra or higher)
  • Must demonstrate effective verbal communication skills and be a team oriented person
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel as needed
