Engtal is seeking a Controls Engineer in Beaverton, MI to own controls projects from design through startup. You will design electrical panels, CAD schematics, BOMs, and documentation, while developing PLC logic, HMI interfaces, and servo motion programs to meet machine specs.
You will work with a distributed engineering team, participate in design reviews, and perform field commissioning and debugging prior to shipment, with hybrid work after training.
This is a hands-on Controls Engineering role focused on the electrical design, programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting of PLC-based automated equipment. Based in Beaverton, Michigan, the position supports the development of thermoforming packaging and automation equipment, with the opportunity for hybrid work after completing the initial training period.
The Controls Engineer will take ownership of controls projects from design through machine startup, including electrical panel layouts, CAD schematics, component selection, bills of materials, and design documentation. On the software side, the role involves developing and modifying PLC logic, HMI/operator interface applications, and servo motion-control programs to meet machine and customer requirements.
This person will work closely with a distributed engineering team throughout the equipment development process, participating in design reviews, checking drawings and BOMs, managing engineering changes, and ensuring designs meet internal, industry, and regulatory standards. They will also be directly involved in machine startup and debugging prior to shipment, followed by field commissioning and troubleshooting support when required.
The ideal candidate has a combination of electrical design and industrial controls experience and is comfortable working across both the hardware and software sides of automation. Candidates should understand PLCs, HMIs, motion/servo controls, electrical engineering design practices, and industrial machinery, with the ability to independently troubleshoot and solve technical problems while collaborating effectively with other engineers.
A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or at least one year of relevant manufacturing experience is required, along with strong technical communication and problem-solving skills. Some travel is required, and candidates must be permanently authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
