Job summary

The Shed in New York, NY seeks a Controller to oversee accounting, budgeting, audits, and financial reporting within a start-up style finance function. This role reports to the Chief Financial and Administration Officer and drives cash management, tax filings, and vendor relations.

Ideal candidate holds a degree in accounting or finance, 5+ years of management, GAAP/not-for-profit expertise, and strong Excel and communication skills; occasional evenings/weekends may be required.

Qualifications

  • A. in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
  • Five or more years of management experience; experience in a cultural institution desired.
  • Extensive experience with GAAP and not-for-profit accounting principles, practices, and regulations.
  • A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a highly motivated, energetic team.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills essential; advanced Excel user.
  • Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the general accounting of the institution, including journal entries, cash disbursements, accounts payable, cash receipts, accounts receivable, reconciliation of bank accounts, and adjusting journal entries.
  • Oversee weekly and bi-weekly payroll processing.
  • Assist in preparation and monitoring of the operating budget working closely with CFAO and department heads.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with staff at all levels to provide support and guidance in implementing The Shed’s fiscal objectives.
  • Preparation of monthly financial reports.
  • Prepare short and long-term cash flow analysis; monitor cash flow and make short-term investment decisions based on working capital needs.
  • Monitor and implement internal control procedures.
  • Responsible for the annual audit and preparation of federal filings including IRS Form 990.
  • Maintain relationships with banks, auditors, and investment advisors.
  • Oversee benefit administration programs.
  • Work with Development department to monitor and reconcile contributions, pledges, and rental revenues.
  • Liaise with retail and catering vendors to report and reconcile earned income streams.
  • Report uses of restricted grants to individuals, foundations and government funders.
  • Monitor the uses of restricted net assets, responsible for "release" of assets on a timely basis.

About the Position

The Shed seeks a Controller to work as a member of a highly accomplished and skilled management team. The Controller will report to the Chief Financial and Administration Officer and provide day to day financial oversight of The Shed’s operating and building construction budgets. Areas of responsibility include accounting, budgeting, investments, banking relations, cash management, employee benefits, annual audit, federal and state tax filings, monthly financial statements, capital projects reconciliation and maintenance of financial information systems. Due to the start-up nature of The Shed, the ideal candidate will be well versed in developing policies and systems for a new organization.
