Controller

Full Time Washington, DC, US

Salary Range: $155,000.00 To $160,000.00 Annually

The Controllershares responsibility with the CFO to manage and develop financial services, systems, procedures and controls for ATA and affiliated entities to meet business and reporting needs, as well as audit and legal requirements. The Controller should be an experienced and detail-oriented finance/accounting professional with a sound knowledge of GAAP. Candidates for the Controller position will have held finance roles of increasing responsibility including the ability to maintain a high-level perspective on the accounting and finance processes, while conducting very detailed work daily.

The Controller directly supervises accounting functions, including Payroll Accounts Receivable, Government Contracts, General Ledger, Senior Accountant and Systems Administration; assists in developing the department budget, certain payroll related costs, investments, and inter-company activity and assists in reviewing the overall ATA budget; and interacts with all ATA staff, other departments, accounting system consultants and vendors, external auditors, banking representatives, investment advisors and actuaries

The incumbent is expected to adhere to company policy and procedures, promote and foster a team-based work environment. They will demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and have the ability to manage and prioritize workload. They will have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive and professional disposition. They must consistently report to work on time prepared to perform duties of the position.

Travel is required less than 5% of the time.

CORE FUNCTIONS:

• Maintain focus on the detailed accounting practice, while also maintaining a “big picture” view of the accounting function.
• Develop controls for new financial processes and assist with creating or updating current procedures.
• Maintain a high level of understanding of the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable process, including partnering with employees who are responsible for these activities
• Manages and audit payroll activities, processes, procedures and oversees the payroll systems.
• Oversees general ledger and accounting staff functions to ensure accurate data entry and account reconciliation. Ensures accurate reporting for various clients including audited financial statements for ATA, multiple affiliated entities and pension plans.
• Establish processes and procedures to properly document financial activity, provide controls, and meet legal and financial reporting requirements alongside the CFO.
• Manages accounting and financial reporting systems, including chart of accounts.
• Manages daily cash and investment levels to meet operating needs of the organization. Makes recommendations for moving funds when needed to meet funding requirements.
• Manages the audit process to the completion of audited financial statements for ATA’s multiple reporting entities.
• Collaborate with the CFO to formulate the annual budget.
• Prepare audit and tax related documents in conjunction with the year-end financial statement audit and preparation of the tax return. Respond to questions from the auditors.
• Ensure accurate and proper documentation is maintained to substantiate all year-end audit schedules, tax return schedules and the annual budget request.
• Prepare designated schedules to assist with preparing the annual tax return.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Relevant Experience – BS/BA in Accounting or completion of CPA exam required plus 5-7 years' experience in accounting with payroll, budgeting and financial statement experience and prior supervisory experience required.

Skill Requirements – Must have strong written and oral communication skills, problem solving skills, and the ability to work with a variety of people to reach solutions. Solid understanding of GAAP, accounting, financial management and related compliance requirements for the associations. Ability to manage a wide variety of simultaneous projects and assignments to meet deadlines and support staff in meeting department deadlines and goals. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial staff. Keen analytical, organization, and strong project management skills required. Advanced MS Excel and experience with accounting databases, payroll systems and report writing tools is required. Microsoft Dynamics SL experience is preferred.

Professional Certification and Affiliations – CPA preferred.
