Job summary

Dakota Matting & Environmental Solutions seeks an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead accounting operations during a growth phase. You will oversee day-to-day accounting, project accounting, and revenue recognition while driving improvements to financial processes, systems, and reporting infrastructure.

The ideal candidate brings 10+ years in accounting leadership for project-based services, with ASC 606 and WIP reporting expertise, and a track record of guiding teams in high-growth

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead accounting operations through a period of growth and process transformation. The role oversees day-to-day accounting, project accounting, and revenue recognition, while driving improvements to financial processes, systems, and reporting infrastructure.

The ideal candidate brings a strong background in construction, environmental engineering, or other project-based service industries, and operates comfortably both hands-on and strategically. This is a working leadership role for a controller who can transition seamlessly into the position, strengthen the accounting function, and partner closely with operations and executive leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting

• Lead the monthly close process and ensure accurate, timely financial statement preparation
• Manage general ledger accounting, inventory accounting, and cost accounting functions
• Support executive reporting, lender reporting, audits, and compliance requirements
• Manage vendor and AP processes, including corporate credit card program oversight
• Build and mentor accounting team members, providing hands-on guidance and development

Revenue Recognition & Project Accounting

• Oversee ASC 606 revenue recognition, percentage-of-completion accounting, and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting
• Manage project accounting and job costing across active projects and service lines, including percentage-of-completion (cost-to-cost) tracking and WIP reporting by revenue type, product line, and region
• Develop operational KPIs and profitability reporting by project and service line

Financial Process & Systems Transformation

• Lead financial process transformation initiatives, building scalable accounting processes, controls, and reporting infrastructure
• Contribute to Cloud ERP optimization efforts and drive continued process improvement (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, NetSuite, Oracle, Sage Intacct, or similar platforms)
• Strengthen internal controls and standardize accounting policies and procedures

Business Partnership & Reporting

• Partner with CFO and operating leadership on forecasting
• Review monthly project performance and margin improvement opportunities with regional project teams
• Serve as a trusted finance partner to executive management, translating financial data into actionable insight
• Collaborate cross-functionally to support company-wide reporting and decision-making needs

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Basic Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance leadership experience
• Strong experience with ASC 606 revenue recognition, percentage-of-completion accounting, and WIP reporting
• Deep understanding of cost accounting, operational finance, and project profitability analysis
• Experience leading accounting teams in operationally intensive environments

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in high-growth environments
• Strong leadership and process transformation experience
• Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or similar cloud based ERP systems
• Experience with Power BI
• Experience with AI-assisted tools (e.g., Claude AI) for financial modeling, documentation, and workflow automation
