Job summary

Cardinal Building Materials is seeking a Controller to own our accounting function end to end. This hands-on leader will manage daily operations, monthly close, and reporting, with direct access to ownership. The role offers broad ownership, process improvement, and collaboration with owners.

You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with the owners in a flat structure, with real latitude to strengthen controls and reporting. This is for breadth, ownership, and impact.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience with monthly close ownership.
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• Willingness to perform hands-on entry work, not only reviews.
• Working knowledge of ERP systems; Infor CloudSuite Distribution preferred.

Responsibilities

• Own day-to-day accounting operations: AP, AR, GL, reconciliations.
• Close books monthly and produce accurate financial statements.
• Manage cash flow reporting and forecasting support for ownership.
• Handle sales/use tax filings, 1099s, and CPA coordination.
• Improve accounting processes and internal controls.

We supply roofing, siding, windows, doors, stone, decking, railing, columns, and gutters to contractors across Missouri and Illinois. Nearly 70 years in, we're still a hands-on, closely held company where ownership knows every employee by name.

The Opportunity

Cardinal Building Materials is looking for a Controller to own our accounting function end to end. This role owns the full cycle — daily operations, the monthly close, and the reporting ownership relies on to run the company.

It's a broad role, and a hands-on one. At our company, the Controller works in the details as readily as reviewing the financial statements, and we're looking for someone who genuinely prefers it that way. You'll have real latitude to improve how things run — the processes, controls, and reporting are yours to strengthen, and we're open to being shown a better way.

You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with owners who know this business inside and out. No layers of management, no committees — direct access to the people who make the final calls, and the trust to run with it.

If you're looking for a narrow, specialized seat inside a large finance organization, this isn't that job. If you want breadth, real ownership, and a direct line to leadership, this is a rare shot at exactly that.

What You'll Do

• Own day-to-day accounting operations — AP, AR, general ledger, bank and credit card reconciliations, and transaction entry
• Close the books monthly and produce accurate, timely financial statements
• Manage cash flow reporting and support ownership with forecasting
• Own sales and use tax filings, 1099s, and coordination with our outside CPA firm
• Maintain and improve accounting processes and internal controls within Infor CloudSuite Distribution
• Support payroll processing and related reporting
• Reconcile inventory and cost of goods sold in coordination with operations
• Identify where manual entry can be automated or streamlined — and then go do something about it
• Partner with ownership on budgeting, margin analysis, and vendor/customer profitability

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience, including ownership of a monthly close
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• Genuine comfort being hands-on — willingness to do the entry work, not just review it
• Working knowledge of an ERP system; Infor CloudSuite Distribution experience is ideal, and experience with any distribution or building-materials ERP (BisTrack, Agility, Spruce, DDI, Sage, Dynamics) translates well
• Strong Excel skills
• Discretion and sound judgment — you'll have visibility into everything
• A clear communicator who can explain the numbers to people who aren't accountants

Nice to have

• CPA or CMA

Compensation & Benefits

• $120,000 – $140,000 per year, depending on experience
